Huge con job and gullible public.
I hardly watch Western TV here, I get annoyed every time.
Not that local TV is much better, if anything they're even more starry eyed. The thing is I don't know their 'sup stars' (super stars), so I don't care too much.

I wish I knew the answer to your OP ,BJD. Machine being the operative word. Pathetic indeed. I have enough difficulty standing in line at the grocery and seeing magazine covers shoved in my face with these people's faces on them.(I rarely if ever recognize these people). Another reason I'm grateful for having grown up in the era that I did when we emulated more worthy persons. The young culture of today doesn't have a prayer it seems.

I watch virtually no "mainstream" TV (have lately been watching All Creatures Great and Small on Netflix... ), can't remember the last time I watched a movie on TV and as most of you know, haven't stepped foot in a movie theater since 1979 (yes, Midnight Express), so I'm even more befuddled than most by this nonsense. I honestly do not know who these people are and from what I see here, that's a good thing.

Well, I don't know who most of them either, but I don't think you or I are their target audience.

I don't know who they are and I don't want to. I like to think that I'm reasonably impervious to this sort of rubbish. Somebody must be interested in them.
.....as far as the media is concerned unless you're aged 18- 35 you don't really count anyway..so I think I'm safe.

I learned of the existence of the Kardashians about three weeks ago.

their name reminds me of the cardassians. so maybe they are famous because everyone is scared of them trying to start a war against earth?

I still don't know who the Kardashians are. I also questions voting for any politician who endorsed by any "hollywood star". Why is their opinion of any value. Then there are the people like Bill Maher, Michael Morre, Rosie O'Donnell, etc., who will say or do almost anything to maintain their level of celeberity and generate more cash.

We have the same here - if you can bothered, try looking up "Katie Price". There are plenty of people who are "famous for being famous", who manage to make a career out of making themselves a "brand" and I imagine it's much the same in other countries as well.
