Couldn't get my camera ready fast enough, but when I was driving out of my neighborhood this morning, a cow moose crossed the road in front of me! First one I've seen in 24 years of living here!

Hummingbird Central here,as the ruby throated hummingbirds make their sojourn through here on their way further south. I can't keep the feeders full enough, fast enough, and also have a gazillion flowers blooming for them to nectar on as well. They are so much fun to watch. Fiercely territorial as well.

I got a good look at the hummingbird(s) which visits my fuzzy cactus, plucking and plucking the fluff. As it was an overcast day, I could clearly see the iridescent green breast with light bands at the throat and abdomen, and a white-tipped tail. Look what I came across online while looking up hummingbirds: hummingbirdworld.com/h/haiku.htm

Delightful! I'm glad ol' D.H. stuck with writing fiction though. I don't fancy him as a poet too much I'm afraid.

Yesterday evening,at right about dusk,I was in the master bedroom which faces onto the back garden. As the weather has been so glorious, the French doors wide open,I sit or lie and watch the evening light, and of late watch the hummingbirds fuel up and chirp, twitter, put it in reverse, hahah!! Well, one of the gems got stuck inside the bedroom (not the first time this has happened...) and I heard it's wings beating frantically up towards the ceiling. Oh god,I thought, here we go again. I don't know how long he had been at this. The first order of business was to remove my cat, Sadie, who was sitting on the floor, watching it with rapt attention, eagerly awaiting something to come her way. I then ran out to the back shed to get the pool skimmer net that I keep for my goldfish pond to remove unwanted debris. As it was now approaching dusk,I ran with the flashlight, trying to uncover the damn thing. Back in the bedroom,I took the net and attempted to steer this guy on out. After several attempts I finally got him out the French doors and turned on the outside balcony light to see if he would take off. He collapsed on the balcony. I quickly grabbed one of the nectar feeders off of the railing and sat down on the deck and carefully, inserted the feeder into it's beak. I could tell he was still alive, but,so very weak. He sipped at the nectar for what seemed like an eternity, then removed it's beak, then went for some more. After a few minutes (probably seconds,my heart was beating so fast at this point,my adrenaline going...) he raised himself up,hovered for a second or two, then flew on off into the evening sky. Phew!!!! I am going to move the feeders away from the doors completely lest this happen again... My cat Sadie, freed now, came back in looking at the ceiling, then the floor, then me, "Mama,Mama, where's my jewel? "

And returning to the original subject of this thread, Christmas day's visitors. They think they're safe in my neighborhood on Christmas. Little do they know that a friend with a turkey permit has requested - and been given - permission to bow hunt for one of these guys on our property. Whether she actually will, though, depends on how her sessions at the archery range go, as she doesn't want to wound one and have it run shrieking through a residential neighborhood. Not to mention the humane issues...

A young eagle flying past the lake cottage. Didn't have the camera handy when the 3 adults flew by.

Kimby! That's an astounding shot, just grand and beautiful.
It's going to be wonderful when you can actually be in the house and find out the routines and identities of all your wild neighbors.
I was wondering -- this thread really seems perfect for Putting Down Roots. Do you all want it moved there, or are you happy leaving it here?

WoW what a serene shot! Makes me think of my Kites and where they are right this minute...... Woolly and Woolleen are stil living in our garden, my son's garden next door and on the farm across the road. Now that it has turned cold I am feeding them morning and evening. If I don't come out with their food and they can see me bashing away on my keyboard here in the study - Woolly bangs on the glass of the sliding door every few seconds!

That's funny! Is Woolly big enough to hurt you if you come outside WITHOUT a treat for him and his girlfriend?

That was general asking, Kimby, so just give your opinion.

That was general asking, Kimby, so just give your opinion. Do you all want it moved there Knowing you to be a former southerner, I was interpreting your query as "y'all" singular not plural. However, my vote is to move it, since you asked so sweetly.

Tsk, tsk, but I guess it's not your fault that don't know that there is no singular y'all/you all, except for actors doing bad accents in movies. 'Course, if you did not know that, others mightn't either, so it's good it came up.
(Gad, aren't we just the politest?! ;D)

Actually, I think maybe Texans use "y'all" in the singular. (My sister was married to one for a brief eternity.)

Reposting an oldie but goodie (and obviously not taken by me): Cordilleran flycatcher, my new neighbor I'm hearing these guys again, though no nest (yet) on the power box. They are a bit late this year, but so is spring. I fully expect the saga to repeat itself for the 5th out of 6 years. (See post 26 on page 1 on this thread and onward to watch them raise their babies.)

Just love that pic of the eagle. I took one recently of an local eagle, but it's too far to be any good.

Both of my eagle pictures are from the same exposure - the "closeup" was just cropped, which serves to enlarge it to a point. Eventually the resolution goes down too much.

Yeah, but cropping is an art too, & you did an artful job on your eagle.

Thank you, ma'am! I expect I'll be "capturing" many more birds at the lake cottage in the future.

BTW, I think "our" flycatcher might be another bird bixa and I take turns hosting, as it winters in Mexico. Perhaps bixa can tell me if her location is within the pink zone...
