hum... not sure it is the right place for this thread. Mods, feel free to move it if I put it in the wrong area!
Important information concerning travelling on Swiss trains follows:
Since December 2011, it is now imperative to purchase a ticket PRIOR to boarding a Swiss train.
In the past, only a small fee was collected for on-board purchase via the attendant. Now, it will cost you something like CHF 90.00 on top of the price of the ticket itself.

I didn't know one could buy tickets aboard the train. Swiss trains aren't cheap at any rate, I think it was over 200 CHF for a Zurich to Rome ticket purchased in Zurich this year.

I remember that my Swiss friends (before they had the unlimited passes) never worried about jumping on a train at the last minute, but these were usually only little local routes like Basel-Zürich or Zürich-Lucerne.

fumobici, next time you intend to use public transports in Switzerland, check this page out. some of these offers are only available from abroad and certainly this page is not visible from a computer in Switzerland. I forgot to get my half-tax one month pass online and was able to get it from the ticket office at Geneva Airport without too much trouble (only had to explain three times that yes, I am Swiss, but I live abroad). www.swisstravelsystem.ch/en/
