I just read the Wikipedia article about shingles and it does not appeal to me at all. It's funny that my Singaporean friend had it so bad because the bad cases are supposed to be reserved for older people, but his back looked like the end of a terrible sunburn.

Cheery -- if you have shingles again, do get it taken care of. It can cause big problems.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am absolutely not new-agey, and tend to be skeptical about lots of things, but I have been told that shingles is one thing that can be cured by "healers". There used to be an older woman living near us who was known in the neighbourhood for curing things like sprains, burns and shingles. She took no money, said it was a gift from god, but she told me that medicines often just push the inflammation inside and it will recur.
I think shingles can be at any age.

Oh bjd, come on! It’s nonsense!

I knew that would be the reaction! But I have actually met two people whose shingles were cured by an osteopath and another by an aunt of hers who was a healer. And no, I don't believe in holy water from Lourdes or any of that stuff and have never been to a healer myself.

I have been told that shingles is one thing that can be cured by "healers" I have heard the same thing quite a few times from very close sources. Maybe it only works in France. And these people never accept payment (although I would find it hard to imagine that they do not accept gifts).

Thanks, Kerouac. I think Mick feels I'm trying to defend all the psychological scam artists out there. Maybe it is a French thing -- like heavy legs and crise de foie.

Shingles will disappear of it’s own course eventually so not difficult to claim you’ve healed it.
I caught chicken pox when I was 18 from my mother who had shingles. You name a place and I had a spot on it.

In the villages of France, the "rebouteux" (healer) is even in this century considered to be a more reliable source of relief for a lot of conditions. I have no idea how reliable it is, but there is perhaps a placebo effect.

I was pretty skeptical but allowed myself be treated by a healer in Bali for the constant severe pain in my back. Totally surreal experience which my female travel companion recorded, she is a psychologist and wanted a massage from the healer as well. I won't go into it here now except one thing was strange. All the time he was working on my back he was more concerned with the "bad spirit" in my right side, going back to it and 'feeling' this lurking evil wanting to hurt me.
After finishing my treatment he spoke to his wife who went into the adjoining paddy field and retrieved 3 duck eggs, mixed with palm sugar and boiling water and put in a new plastic bottle. This I was to drink over the next 2 days. Tasted like creme caramel. Due to fly home next day so finished it at the airport.Three days later, aged 60+ I had bad pain and went to hospital. My appendix was removed as it was about to rupture. Bit unusual for my age, but it got rid of that batch of bad spirits.

Shingles can get into the eye resulting in nasty damage. Best to have the anti-shingles vaccination ...not cheap but worth it.

Is chickenpox among those childhood illnesses that are worse on adults than on small children?

Chicken pox can be fatal in adults, altho it's rare as it's a very common childhood illness. Only came across 2 cases in our hospitals over 30 years. One died, one recovered.
I had a telephone consultation with our GP this morning, he reckons its shingles too. He's given me Aciclovir. He also offered quite strong pain killers which I havent taken him up on as atm I'm managing ok on paracetamol. Just got to take it easy for a few days, I've had to move my flu injection (was this Friday) to the end of November as I've got quite a long course of antivirals to take.

Shingles can get into the eye resulting in nasty damage. Best to have the anti-shingles vaccination ...not cheap but worth it. A co-worker of my husband had shingles a few years ago and yes it did get into his eye, it was quite a serious situation and caused damage. I am almost certain that the anti-shingle vaccination is free here and provided by a doctor, pharmacist or health unit clinic. When we had our interview with our new doctor (a few years ago), he asked him if I should consider it and he told us to wait until age 60, now I wonder why he would have said that, maybe it was still relatively new at that point. My husband asked because his friend had just recovered from shingles and was told that they are often brought on by stress.

I've not been offered the vaccine yet. I would've thought that I will be now. My GP reckons it's brought on by stress, maybe because of the local coronavirus restrictions and/or me living on 800 calories per day.
I lost a stone quickly but have only dropped another 4 lb in 3 weeks...should still lose on 1000. I'm taking multivitamins and eating lots of greens.
My back is sore this evening...should've accepted the pain killers!

Cheery -- that's how diets work, especially strict ones like you are on. The weight comes off fast at first but then your body adjusts to what it's getting and slows down. But it's probably better to lose slowly and surely rather than dropping a lot and then putting it back on.

Obviously as a nurse trained in the NHS in the 70s/80s I have been sceptical of healing and certain other alternative medicine. Not necessarily all because of course I know many homeopathic treatments are the predecessors of more modern medical treatment. But healing was always something I was always resolutely againstsceptical about . A few years ago an old horse of mine was dying and we had reached the end of modern vetenary treatment but for several reasons I could not have her put to sleep for several days and I was worried about her stress. Anyway a relative of mine offered to try Reiki and I was amazed at how my old girl relaxed and settled during and after the treatment.

I have always been sceptical of healers but I want to believe in them. I also want to believe in UFOs. I think just about everybody needs a dose of the supernatural or inexplicable in their lives. That's also why Lourdes is such a draw.

Despite what I posted above, I too have always been sceptical about any healers, UFOs and all that. I don't even want to believe in them. But perhaps some things are just inexplicable.
I have never been anywhere in Lourdes other than the train station even though we lived an hour and a half drive away for many years.

We know that animals can often cure themselves of some illnesses and injuries. I don't think it's a great leap to think that healers such as the lady Bjd mentioned might be able to give humans the psychological wherewithal to heal themselves.

Don't have any experience with traditional healers, like you all I tend to be skeptical.
I felt heaps better this morning after 2 days of staying home...so went for a short walk with the dog. My back is now on fire. On my walk I stayed away from people (shingles isn't 'catching'...just the blisters can be..and I havent got them atm)...found that my darling husband had told every neighbour and dog owner about my illness so folk were a bit nervous to see me out and about!

At last the little rash has come out on my back...I was starting to wonder I did been wrong about the shingles and maybe something else was going on...but yesterday I noticed the rash, a small area that I can't see because my head wont turn around that far....I got Jeff to have a look thi morning and almost hit the roof when he poked it (he washed his hands thoroughly dont worry). I should be on the mend now anyway...when the rash fades the pain should go...fingers crossed...
