Actually, there are other Chinese New Year threads somewhere or other, maybe in Postcards. Ahh ~ so I'm not crazy! For now I am enjoying this latest thread, but will definitely go back to see earlier ones. This is such an vibrant event and it looks as though many people of all ages turned out, despite the cold. Do you have any idea why all the people who don't appear to be ethnically Asian are participating? It does swell the ranks and make for more fun, in any event. There are far too many pictures that I love to pick out any favorites, but I have to say how much I love the fifth photo in #32, pretty much all of #s54 & 55, and that wonderful group of young ladies on "horseback". In the old days, it was automatically assumed that nearly all of the 'Chinese' in France were actually Indochinese from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Not anymore. That's interesting. Is it because there were few Chinese, or simply because of the number of Indochinese. And the old days -- pre-1980s?

Yes, pre-1980's. So many Vietnamese (and other) boat people arrived in 1975 that it was hard to notice that a major immigration wave was also in progress from China.
As for the non Asian participation, I imagine that lots of people are recruited in their schools and at martial arts clubs. After all, this is a celebration of Chinese new year, not of being Chinese. Nevertheless, I imagine that some people are taken aback when they see the costumes they are supposed to wear while others find it to be hilarious fun.
