Photobucket is not working so well for me tonight, so here is another page of photos, I hope... I have a photo of my niece sitting on my knee before my wedding and another when she was about 13, so at her wedding reception I asked her to sit on my knee again. I am going to frame the three photos together for her. This is the bride's cousin, my other niece with her mother, my baby sister! I loved the old fashioned shoulder stole they chose to wear. The hall was decorated so beautifully, we went on the eve of the wedding to help decorate.

So much icing on the cake! Eating that would have been my theme!

Absolutely beautiful, Mich ~~ understated, elegant, & those cool winter colors somehow glowing with the warmth of the occasion.
Beautiful bride, as well ......... and a beautiful aunt of the bride.

hnwinpp we only got to eat the cupcakes, the bride and groom got the cake to take home and freeze to have to celebrate again on their first wedding anniversary! That is a custom here, not sure if this is shared elsewhere?
Speaking of the food, wow! I should have taken pictures of that as well, but I just forgot as I had put my camera away during the meal. I can tell you what there was though...
It was a Roast Beef Buffet service, complete right down to the horseradish and gravy! There were seasoned roasted red potatoes, green and yellow beans, coleslaw, pasta salad, a mixed leaf salad, vegetable and cheese trays.
There were so many desserts, red velvet cake, black forest cake, orange creamsicle cake and there were also about 5 different types of squares, chocolate coconut, brownies, nanimo, lemon and raspberry and then later on we had the cupcakes. They also had a cotton candy making machine that spun cotton candy in the color of the attendants dresses.
We had a great time, the DJ played music for all ages and they was dancing until after 1:00 a.m. no one wanted to go home.

Thank you Bixa, I like your choice of words to describe it, understated elegance, exactly what I was feeling in the room during the evening. There was also a third colour that I did not seem to get a picture of but it was of a dark blue mixed with the ice blues and silver.
Cheers, Mich

It's nice to see a winter wedding instead of a spring or summer wedding for once. One thing about wedding decorations perplexes me -- and I have seen this in North America, Egypt, Southeast Asia and Australia. Why oh why do they wrap up the chairs in fabric? I can't stand that! Is it one of those decorative ideas that prove the irreconciliable differences between women and men?

Thank you Kerouac, indeed, that is why I thought I would share the photos of my nieces wedding. Winter weddings are very unusual, especially where I live where there the weather is very unpredictable and a storm could cause so many of your guests from being able to attend if coming from out of town. Fortunately, the weather was pretty good, just a little snow the days leading up to the wedding but none the day of, but it was cold, hence the girls wearing stoles over their shoulders.
We had to cover the chairs the night before and my goodness, what a process. The covers were made from a satin like material in the shape of a gigantic pillow case. You slip them over the chair, the excess on each side is pulled behind and tied in a bow. Sounds simple right? Well it was harder then it looked and there were about 200 of them to do.... But the chairs were all different colors underneath so it did make the hall look much prettier, yes a girl thing, ha ha!
We were married in November, unheard of back then. It definitely was easy to book the church, hall, hotel rooms for guests, etc. because I was not competing with a whole bunch of other brides. Some friends thought I must have been pregnant to plan a winter wedding, but that was almost 30 years ago, thoughts are certainly more different now.
Cheers, Mich

It certainly seems risky having a winter wedding in Ontario. Glad to see it went off without a hitch.
The photo of you and your niece is darling, and so is the one of your other niece and your sister. You have a beautiful family.
It was a clever idea to have the pine cone centerpieces. The cake and cupcakes look delicious, and the cotton candy machine was a fun touch. And it was good of you to pitch in with the chair-wrapping. That sure seems like a labor-intensive project!
This looks like a lovely wedding. Thank you for sharing.

Actually, wrapping the chairs is necessary to maintain the look of the theme, as Mich points out, plus gives them a look of solidity appropriate to a formal occasion. But there are practical reasons as well. Those folding chairs have hinges that can pinch & often edges or screws that can pick the fabric of people's clothes. The fabric also muffles noise, a very good thing in a large room with many people having a good time. I would have chosen a less slithery, denser material for those chairs, but probably cost is a factor also in having to cover so many chairs. hnwinpp we only got to eat the cupcakes, the bride and groom got the cake to take home and freeze to have to celebrate again on their first wedding anniversary! That is a custom here, not sure if this is shared elsewhere? There were so many desserts, red velvet cake, black forest cake, orange creamsicle cake and there were also about 5 different types of squares, chocolate coconut, brownies, nanimo, lemon and raspberry and then later on we had the cupcakes. They also had a cotton candy making machine that spun cotton candy in the color of the attendants dresses. I don't know that custom, Mich. I've always heard of a slice of the big wedding cake being saved for the bride & groom to share on their first anniversary. I know that cupcakes have become rather chic adult fare in the past few years. Is that when they began appearing at weddings? I've never been to a wedding where there were so many desserts!

You are correct nycgirl, having a winter wedding is extremely challenging, from the guests arriving into town, the flowers, worrying that no one slips if there is ice... But everything went really well and it was really beautiful.
The Happy couple are now honeymooning in Quebec at Mount Tremblant and yesterday they went zip lining!
The chairs were labor intensive. A friend of mine is getting married this summer and had many questions about my nieces wedding, the one thing I advised her on was, spend the money on hiring someone to do your decorating, it was too much work for the wedding party to be worrying about that. I know we all try to save money and weddings can be so expensive, but this expensive I would recommend paying for. Thank goodness so many friends, aunts and uncles showed up to help and so many cousins stayed after wards to help disassemble.
Today, I am going to try to take a photo of the photo of me holding my niece at my wedding to post for you all to see.
Thank you for the lovely compliments! Mich

Yes Bixa, the fabric was slippery, but it sure made it easy to tie the bowes, ha ha!
The choices of desserts was amazing, that is one of the topics I want to talk about with my niece when she comes home and we get to sit and have tea and talk and reminisce about the wedding.
The cupcakes are extremely popular. There are even cupcake stands to hold them. Some of the stands are shaped like a Christmas tree and totally replace the need for a cake.
When I married, it was custom for the bride to take the top layer of the cake to freeze and to have on their first wedding anniversary, but having such a small cake for the bride and groom only was certainly new for me.
Cheers! Mich

The traditional French wedding "cake" is actually a gooey pyramid of pastry balls that is meticulously dismantled at some time during the proceedings. "Pièce montée" is the name.

That's such a sweet photo. Mich, you look lovely and she's a little doll. You two really favor each other.
Kerouac, I like your photo, too. Who's the pretty bride?

That's an anonymous photo from the net.
And I don't care if the chairs don't match. I just think that it is stupid and wasteful to wrap them up.

Thank you all for the comments.
I was just so proud, she was so organized, put so much thought into every detail that made not just only pretty to look at but also of how comfortable the whole day and evening went.
Christine, yes there was a massive buffet dinner, roast beef, seasoned red potatoes, yellow and green beans, salads, cheese and vegetable trays, breads, etc.
Today I had tea with my niece and we talked at length about the wedding and reception. It was funny when she told me when she sat down to eat and looked at all the food and desserts, she started going through the conversations in her head that she had with the caterer to make sure she understood the cost. There was so much food, she thought she was going to have to go looking for some extra money to pay for everything, that she must have misunderstood...

I had written a long and detailed post and my server decided to freeze. I'll get back to this, but probably not this evening, as I'm too pissed off...

These are such lovely photographs Mich, and I'm sure that your niece will treasure the photographs of her sitting on your knee. The idea of a winter theme is refreshing as has been said before and the hall looks splendid. As for the chair dressing thing...I've never really understood it but know people who think it's imperative for a well dressed room. My word, what beautiful brides you and your niece make...aw.

Thanks for the kind compliments Cheery! My only problem is to get the original photo of us out of my wedding album, seems it is stuck to the page! I guess I will have to think of ways to pull it off without ruining it! I think I may try putting the page into the freezer...?
Cheers, Mich

Have you got a scanner? If you make a mask out of white paper so that only this photo in copied by the scanner would that solve your problem?

Hmmmm... I do have a scanner connected to my desktop computer, I have not used it in a long time, but it is worth the effort of giving it a try. Thanks Cheery!
