Thanks for the clarification, bixa. From your wonderful photos, particularly the last two, I couldn't tell if your mirlitons were four inches or four feet!

I was looking at this thread again and it dawned on me that you have moved since creating this madness. I don't suppose you have room to grow them where you are now Bixa.
Well, the mirlitons here are currently in season. A neighbor just dropped me off a bag.

Just two of the many varieties here, where they're also in season right now. For people contemplating growing them, see the little sprout emerging from the chayote at @12 o'clock? That's how eager they are to get going. Once you see that, you'll notice others in the pile starting to sprout.

Difficult to wrap my head around that this is the same fruit!!! It's so odd looking compared to the smooth version of ours here.
