I swear freely in my house. The kids tend not to copy me (although my teen daughter is getting the hang of it) and they know as most people are idiots, they best not use those words in public lest the idiots take offense and cause a disturbance.
Good troll. I almost believed you.
If it is true though then everyone who doesn't share your view of swearing is an idiot? And if you came to my house would you feel it is ok to swear in front of my children because it is fine to do so with yours? Or would I be an idiot if I objected?
Hmmm, interesting views you have.

Actually, as a guest in anyone's house I respect and adhere to the rules/standards upheld there - as do my children.

Yesterday I said a swear word for the first time in almost 5 years. Perhaps this is an indication of progress for me. Cheers! Mich

I'm an idiot then. I objected last weekend when a woman's 13 year old told his sister to F off when we were in a cemetery tidying up MIL's grave.

Would you continue to swear, as it is us that are the guests and it's your house, or would you temper your language because there are idiots present? I'm just trying to find the line when you do and when you don't.

In conversation between close adult family I may occasionally use the F word but NEVER in front of strangers. I am also totally against any child or teenager swearing in earshot of an adult be it man or woman. If they were in public place in my company they would be so vehemently reprimanded that wouldn't know what hit them. Swearing or using foul language in public is a big no no. I actually deem in an insult. Displaying a foul mouth, as Kerouac put it, especially in a woman is so demeaning and actually shows the person has no other intelligent way of putting their view across. I also think people think it in vogue to punctuate their sentences with the F word as every other word in their sentences. Poor sorry lot! Now all you sailors out there don't shoot me - this is my humble opinion

Of course you are entitled to your opinion. I would always moderate my language when in the company of strangers, children or people I know to be offended by swearing.
I don't think that I use swearing when I don't have the vocabulary to express myself. I find people who pepper every sentence with swearwords (generally people who have no consideration/awareness of anybody but themselves) extremely annoying....but the occasional swearword isn't going to offend me. I would have thought that most socially aware adults understand the need to curtail their language in public and in front of youngsters. Moderation and respect being key....

well as i said i do swear, though not all the time - but that doesn't mean i can't express myself otherwise, it's mainly an outlet for anger - obviously not in all situations, and all companies of course. i would think i sometimes say a swearword in front of children, but it's rare, because usually i automatically swear less when there's a small child. and i don't think i could ever say a swearword at a child...
but as for swear-words being meaningless - all words, in themselves, are meaningless, they are given meaning by convention and use and all that... and insults, for example, can be very painful... like, for example, racist or sexist slurs are not okay imho, because they are "just words"... (of course there is the additional thing that the conventions about a word's meaning change overtime and in specific context, and a word that is an insult in one case, might not be one in another...)
(p.s. oops that post got longer than planned... sorry)

As a mechanic for many years there was a lot of swearing in the work environment but as I changed jobs over the years this declined until eventually there was very little and I swore less and less. It's come to a point now, with living in foreign countries also being a factor and even though I may well fit the 'profile' of someone who swears a lot, apart from the odd bugger, shit or bastard I can't actually remember the last time I said fuck (I've written it a few times though). I just don't feel the need to do so or see the need for doing so any more.

Prior to joining this forum,I took great offense at the word 'cunt'. In fact, there is a post on his board ,by me, somewhere, where I state such a fact and rant a bit about the lack of respect, how offensive etc. the word is/was. I have modified my view of its usage since then and actually,to my husband's initial shock when he first heard me,now laughs heartily when I, (on rare occasions albeit), do use it. So,essentially what I'm saying is,I never used the word cunt until becoming a member of Any Port. The word does seem to be used much more freely over in Europe than it is in the U.S. Not many U. S. women I know use it at all. Therefore,I am very careful with it's usage.

I objected last weekend when a woman's 13 year old told his sister to F off when we were in a cemetery tidying up MIL's grave. We're all idiots - recognizing that fact is the critical first step to becoming less of one. well as i said i do swear, though not all the time - but that doesn't mean i can't express myself otherwise, it's mainly an outlet for anger - obviously not in all situations, and all companies of course. i would think i sometimes say a swearword in front of children, but it's rare, because usually i automatically swear less when there's a small child. and i don't think i could ever say a swearword at a child...

(p.s. oops that post got longer than planned... sorry) It may be my own peculiar brand of idiocy, but I don't place swearing in the same class as racist or sexist slurs - which, generally, have a very clear meaning and/or recall a painful history for far too many. Hmmmm, so sodomy and feces are ok to shout about but not the very act that created life for all of us? Fascinating. Prior to joining this forum,I took great offense at the word 'cunt'. A woman I have a lot of respect for (I'd have even more were she not a vegetarian) once angrily asked me why we would use a that word in a derogatory fashion when it's origin is to identify an anatomical feature which gives men so much pleasure. She has a point.

Yesterday I said a swear word for the first time in almost 5 years. Perhaps this is an indication of progress for me. You've been spending too much time on Any Port, my dear. Now you're swearing like a sailor! I have let the F-bomb slip sincerely and loudly when my weed-whacker died suddenly in the midst of clearing the Sanibel yard. The sudden absence of the weed-whacker's whine and the proximity of the lagoon carried my indiscretion far and wide in this subdivision of old retired people. Ooops!

I frankly am surprised by the word 'cocksucker' used as an epithet. I don't know of any man that does not enjoy being the object of this activity. Of course, when it is used as an insult, it only applies to other men, and in most cases other men who do not even engage in such activity, which is what makes it 'insulting.' By the same token, insults like 'dish washer' or 'toilet cleaner' or 'shirt ironer' should be used as well, because all men like this being done but find it demeaning if other men do it (unless of course they are Chinese or Pakistani).

OOh...I don't say the 'C'-word.....I went to a production called 'The Vagina Monologues' where the audience (almost 100% female...the odd frightened looking male) were actively encouraged to reclaim this word, to take it away from those who debased it...but I just can't say it...it's a step too far.
Actually since Mark started this thread I've been thinking a lot about when and where I swear, and whilst I don't for one minute think that it's disapproval from others that have moderated my language...I think that I am swearing much less.
When I speak to some of my friends it's almost compulsory...but when I didn't swear at all...they didn't even notice. However I did drop a flower pot on my foot t'other morning and the air did turn a vivid blue in the greenhouse...it was muttered through clenched teeth so I don't think that any small children were injured....

I do swear, but am careful about the company I do it in. With husband and very close friends, I can certainly let rip.
Since I'm in Ontario, I often swear in French, because when the words are translated, they are not swear words in English. I mean, what is offensive about "tabernacle" "chalice" and "host"?

I soooooo fucking know where you're coming from, Casimira!
Joanne, my brother told me that the most common swear combo in Spain is, "I shit on the Host!", which I think might offend a larger spectrum of people than our mundane sexually-oriented swearing in English.

in my malayalam phrase-book they had two malayalam swear words: roughly translating into "son of a dog" and "son without father". when i showed two of the male teachers, both in their mid-20s, they kind of giggled embarrassed and told me to not use those words though... i didn't even show that part of the phrase book to the female teachers or the priest i was staying with...

I hear a lot with the mother being involved though. On Saturday I was invited out on a boat (different one from the usual one) by some friends. They said they were going down river to a place called 522 Kien Svay. I've been to Kien Svay a lot, for grilled chicken, so I didn't inquire further, in fact I asked a new staff member if she wanted to join me as she is from the north and had never been there. Anyway, we took off, went down the Tonle Sap river, entered the Mekong, then passed the small island with the Vietnamese floating village (lots of pics of this one in my other threads). But then we passed the islands and headed straight to a group of floating brothels! I said WTF!, we're going to those? And they looked at me as if I was the idiot. So I started swearing a blue streak but the colleague I'd invited thankfully didn't understand a thing, and in fact didn't even realize where we were

Reading through this thread again, I was thinking about how the majority of fucking swearers don't seem to fucking notice if you are not talking the same fucking way that they are -- they just blithely go on and on in their normal speech pattern.
At least that's the way they behave in a "standard group of peers." Sometimes you can see them trying to restrain themselves if a small child appears, or somebody's grandmother, but a lot of fucks keep slipping out anyway as though there were no way to stop them.
So now this has me thinking about speech patterns. We all, uh, know people who, uh, can't say anything, uh, without sprinkling 'uh' into each and every sentence. And then there are the people who end every sentence with "y'know what I mean?" or who are down to one adjective like 'awesome' or 'weird' and use it to describe every situation or object. So a lot of these 'fuck' people are just suffering from the same problem.
Maybe doctors will find a cure some day.

We spent a weekend with good friends in Michigan a month ago. Her mother and stepfather were visiting also (her mother adores my husband ;D) and as they are good Baptists, the 4 of us were very careful with our language. I mean, minor swear words were out! So the 4 of us got in the car to go do something and my girlfriend said "Okay, they can't hear us" and in unison, the 4 of us screamed "FUCK!". I thought it was amusing.
