That sure is an XXL but such a great idea. There are none of any size where I live, but I wish there were. Here are a couple I have seen a couple on my travels. PEC, Ontario Gruissan , France

That one at the 104 looks great. Have you found books there too or do you just drop stuff off?
Book boxes seem to be a beach thing in France. There are small ones at the entrance to all the beaches of the Bassin d'Arcachon.
I understand from the local librarian that there is a project to put a book box here where I live. Meanwhile, they are building a new library and each time I go I see big boxes of newly arrived books waiting to be put at the new place.

So far, I have only taken one book from the 104 while I have left at least 30 books there so far. Basically, I need to get rid of a lot more books before thinking of collecting any.
In Paris most of the little book boxes that I have seen are along the tram lines at various stations. I might make a point of taking books to a couple of them soon. I know that the CentQuatre does not really need more books at the moment -- in fact I had trouble finding room to stuff what I had brought. That is not the case of most book boxes -- I have seen a number of them that are empty.

The book box closest to my daughter's house in Bayonne had a notice put inside telling people not to put in old magazines.
Most of the books I found in book boxes were put back after being read.

That's great. What a wonderful way for this man to encourage children to read and write.
When I was a kid in Toronto, not only were there public libraries, but a Bookmobile would come near the school and kids whose parents didn't take them to libraries were also able to borrow books.

That is great, Bjd -- that bookmobile in Toronto meant kids encouraging other kids to read by example.

With our library closed, I sure wish there was a Little Library in my neighborhood...

Somewhere, I don’t think it was here on Anyport, I saw a picture of a little library that had been turned into a mini-distribution point for hand sanitizer, wipes, toilet paper, etc.

All the book boxes in Bayonne are closed during the epidemic, which is unfortunate since libraries are all closed too. And yesterday when I talked to my mother, she was upset that the library in the senior's residence where she lives is also closed.
And I guess our new library here won't be opening in mid- April as planned.

With our library closed, I sure wish there was a Little Library in my neighborhood... Guess what? There is!! Mr. Kimby and I took a longer walk than usual today, and came across a Little Free Library about a mile from our house! Even better, though it was pretty small, it had a pretty good selection, including a book we have had on our list for downloading from the public library’s overdrive.com offerings. Peace Like A River by Leif Engel! So excited! Plus we now have a place to take our surplus books. There’s an Isabel Allende in the Little Library that I have my eye on...

With libraries and book stores closed these little gems have been more and more active than ever.
Someone came up with the brilliant idea of having "specialized" Little Libraries and posting a link with a map of where to go for specific books. There are 4 or 5 "headquarters where volunteers go and sort through the various boxes and transport the books to the designated spots, Volunteers also transport books to folks who cannot get out and about upon request.
One of the most popular is of course specific to children's books.
There are several different categories: Arts and Crafts Fiction Biographies Science and Nature Magazines Comic Books Self Help and New Age DVD and CD's Foreign Language Cookbooks Travel and Leisure NOLA Literature (local authors, history, art and architecture, maps, music) LARGE PRINT Braille
There is also a request list for those who are looking for a specific book or topic related.
All of them have hand sanitizer available and I have seen some with hand made masks in zip lock bags
So far, it has been working quite efficiently and the honor system has prevailed.

I took a load of books to the book trailer at the Cent Quatre last week. It had been more than a year since my last delivery but i hope to go more regularly this year. I didn't even look at what was available to take this time.

Each time I go to Bayonne, I take a couple of books to put in a box. I'm always glad to see that people are putting in books and taking some out. Obviously those book boxes are a good idea.

I was disappointed to not see any in Mexico but there may have been some, but not on our beaten path. Not that I need any more books I did pick up a used biography of Frieda Lawrence (wife and muse of Novelist D.H. Lawrence ) for $1.00 USD at the American Library of/in Oaxaca.
I'm pleased to hear that the "Free Little Library" in Bayonne is still going strong BJD and apparently utilized quite a bit. The location couldn't be more ideal.
Kimby, I thought I had made the suggestion some time ago but I don't see it on here. I was going to suggest that you and Mr. K design and build one of these gems. While you may not have the means or skill set to build it yourself, perhaps you could have some kind of fund raiser or something along those lines to appeal to your community. A contest for different designs (commission someone to design a little "lake cottage" much like your own) or whatever people come up with. There's no limit to where it might go, the possibilities are endless and be fun at the same time.

Casimira -- the book boxes in Bayonne were set up and are maintained by the city. So they are metal, with doors with windows and several shelves in each box. Like this: book boxes
