It's impossible to imagine that anyone could pull that off!

When a writer finishes another's work, do they follow the style and idiosyncrasies of the first, or use his/her own style? How much new plot or characters is allowed?

For no particular reason, I somehow thought he was much younger, so this is a bit of a shock.

Aw. I just found out that Joan Acocella died early this January. Anything she wrote, even on subjects that I thought did not interest me, such as dance, was compelling reading because of her insight and superb, restrained style. Acocella had a unique writing style and voice that made her essays stand out. She was known for her fabulous erudition combined with a frankness that was uncommon. Her wit and originality captivated readers and made her essays a joy to read. sourcegreenwichvillagefuneralhome.com/obituary/?ob-id=2788&obit=Joan%20Acocella

American writer Paul Auster died yesterday at age 77. He was more popular in Europe than in his home country.

Whereas he was warmly appreciated in France, he was equally treasured in his own country.
In any case, it really hit me hard when I read of his death this morning. I can't say I loved everything he ever wrote -- I ditched 4 3 2 1 almost immediately after starting it -- but was a staunch and admiring fan.

My newspaper today devoted its first 4 pages to Paul Auster.
