Hm. Bet you hit on a rich sociological topic there! Yeah, I imagine when a computer is shared by a couple, there's a certain polite discipline about using it too much. That could easily go out the window when there's finally an opportunity to reeeeally use the computer as much as one wanted.

Yeah, but I still reckon it would be impolite of me to tug one off watching porn when she's only 3 feet away ....

I would think that the conversations have become more enriched with all of the things you have learned on the internet, like what the weather is outside.

Yeah, true. Mrs G is fascinated by geographically irrelevant dullness.

When we used to live in half the surface we have now, we'd both be in the living room whether on the (shared) computer or not. So we would actually talk to each other.
Now, the computer is relegated upstairs so either we are together in the living room, interacting. Or one is on the computer and the other watching dvd's reading, etc... When he plays, and the weather isn't too cold, I take my knitting with me and sit on the stairs, so we can communicate.
I half dread the moment we will get one computer each as I have had horrible experience of it with my ex, who was glued to his screen. At the end, I would communicate with him online, from two feet away, to ask him if he wanted some dinner too...

I don't mind if my bf plays on the computer whilst in my presence. I know he enjoys it as much as I do. There's plenty of time for chatting whilst enjoying a meal together.

I know I spend way too much time online. Admittedly, I use the computer as a tv/movie watching device also, but the computer chair gets more use than any other piece of furniture in the house. The other day I came in from shopping and started cooking. When I was done, I sat down at the dining table to eat but was distracted by a low-level noise. I went into the living room to check, and found the computer turned on. I must have come home & on the way to or from the bathroom unconsciously & out of habit flicked the electronic addiction on even though I had no reason to.

I was wondering how things have evolved over the past few years.
For example, I have 4 live computers and one dead one. That's a bit much.

I use my laptop in the living room of an evening...OH is usually watching some rubbish on the tv...we talk. OH has his own PC in the other room and when he's playing his 'shoot 'em up' games he generally has headphones on cos I find the noises are rather irritating. Our son also has a laptop in his room...I think he's on facebook most of the time. We still interact...I think that my attention span has diminished somewhat since I started using message boards, but we all share interesting things we see online...I once sent my son an email saying 'The dinner's ready' but just to make him laugh....

My computer is in the living room so when I'm using it the kids of an evening are watching a dvd (no normal television received) and the wife is on a laptop on the table in the same room. We all may be doing different things but are in the same room and do interact quite a lot.

My brother and sister-in-law are arriving soon, and I will be leaving a computer at their disposal for whatever private use they might wish. This is quite a bit of progress (?) from olden times when one's guests just had to put up with whatever the situation was and only had the opportunity to communicate with other people once they had left the area and/or returned home.
I wonder how this changes the perception of a trip, since a thought like "this is the worst day ever" might seem just like a mildly comic anecdote only 24 hours later. People need to have time to digest their travel experience rather than blogging them in the moment, no?
But we have abandoned that comfort, it seems.

On our recent trip to France, we chose not to bring our laptop. We were going to bring it for the purpose of watching a movie now and again. We found out that my husband's new mobile phone connected us to the internet and email. I was happy to read a few of the emails but did not need the internet at all. I keep brochures, business cards and receipts to help my memory when people ask to see my photo album of our latest trip. I stick them in throughout the album and have found them interesting when I look back at trips past.

Well, many people did & do keep handwritten travel journals. I only did it once, then wondered what I supposed to do with it afterward. The only person who ever read it was one of my brothers, because he was interested in where I went. I didn't edit anything in it, the way one might for a blog or email or forum.

i tried writing journals on various travels (or take my journal along when i was still writing one in general) - unfortunately i usually was too busy to write. but never wondered what to do with them afterwards, i like re-reading them...
