That's lovely, LaGatta. I hope it works out for both of you.

And some cats learn to travel with confidence with their "person." Maybe you will be able to do so.

My darling Sadie disappeared over 2 weeks or so ago and I am having to reconcile that she after 16 years sleeping by my side she was suffering from a slow renal failure and chose to wander off and die on her own terms. She had taken "walk abouts" in the past but always returned within a few days. I waited and waited, cried and cried, but she never returned. Her appetite had diminished and she was drinking copious amounts of water and peeing a lot. She never seemed to be in pain or suffering but I could not help and at times still wonder if I missed something and put myself through major guilt trips on some days. I prefer to think that she did not want for me to see her suffer and knew on some level that I was in despair dealing with my husbands health issues. I miss her terribly.

Oh casi, I am so, so sorry. It's the not knowing that is even worse than the loss, in some ways. Cats are so dignified and often prefer to go off on their own. I've heard tell that they are trying to escape the physical distress and hiding away from the world makes sense to them. And I'm also so sorry you are having to deal with this at such a difficult time in your own life. Thanks for letting us know.

Oh, Casi. So sorry to hear this. Your furbaby probably knew what she was doing when she took herself off to die, but she couldn't have known the impact her disappearance would have on you. Death by kidney failure is not uncommon in old kitties, and it is not easy for us humans to sit by and watch helplessly as our beloved pet fails slowly but surely. She may have done you a favor, though it probably doesn't feel like it. You don't need to be nursing a sick husband and a sick cat at the same time. Hope T. Is doing better.
Thinking of you both.

I'm sorry, Casimira. Cats being very private, they generally don't want to tell us what's bothering them and like quite a few other animals, they prefer for the end to come in a quiet peaceful (and private) place. Dogs on the other hand count on their people to do something for them until the last minute. So many people have described the last little woof that a dog will give just as it expires. "Goodbye."

Hugs... We have 9 cats at home, but seeing oone go is never easy. We nearly lost one recently. Vet told us she had probably kicked in the belly, but she probably was run over by a car or a bike. She is recovering very fast (she is about one year old btw) but her vertebral column took a strange shape. Maybe it becomes a problem later but I found her in a tree this afternoon, so it must be nearly normal...

That is great news. Cats are so reliable/unreliable (cross out whichever does not apply).

You got that right K2. I never fully accepted that she was totally gone somehow. The dreams, quasi neighbor's "sightings", her "reappearance" this past Tuesday and all that ensued in crawling underneath this tiny space underneath a house across the street and wrenching my bad shoulder in the process, all came to a happy ending. On the cusp of our going on holiday for 3 weeks in just a couple of days from now, I don't know had the timing been later, if she would have survived. She was clearly finding food and water somewhere, and being so tiny to begin with well, as the vet told us, at age 15, she has seen some similar cases but, when she went to draw blood from her jugular vein and did not flinch or cry (I on,the other hand shielded my eyes and ears until it was over) the vet told me that this cat was a survivor of which she had seen few to none in her 23 year long practice.

Good to hear that your cat is safe and at home again, Casi. What are you going to do with her when you go on holiday?

It will be hard to leave her when we go on holiday, she has been super clingy. I have a dear friend who is going to house sit both my dog Papi, Sadie and tend the garden. I trust she will be fine especially now that I have got all her health test results.

We noticed our Sadie cat has a very blood shot left eye. She doesn't appear to be in any discomfort. I am loathe to start googling what condition this could or could not be. I'm too "anxotic" to begin with. If it doesn't improve some by tomorrow I'll call the vet.
Any advice or experience with this would be gratefully appreciated.

We took MiL's Kitty to vet with red eyes and it turns out she has dental problems. Who knew the tooth bone's connected to the eye bone?!

Thanks for the input Kimby.
I bit the bullet and did google and read some of the various sites and possible causes.
(I did not see anything related to dental issues).
Some of the most common causes range from conjunctivitis and other optic nerve issues blah, blah, blah.
Sadie's doesn't appear to have changed since yesterday so I'm going to take her to the vet this afternoon to be on the safe side. She's 16 years old this month and has never had any illnesses, injuries etc. in all these years so, we've been very lucky.

Maybe she got a foreign body in her eye while she was on her "walkabout?" What affects one eye often affects the other, too.

She's been back home since October 4th so I think if that were the case it likely would have manifested itself by now.
My theory and this seems to make sense is that in the past week she has been shaking her head quite a bit, not chronically, but enough to catch our attention. It could be that she has ear mites and the shaking of the head may have burst a blood vessel/capillary.
So the vet visit is even more necessary in that there are potentially two problems, ears and eye. Related or unrelated they need attention.

Taking her to the vet this early p.m. The eye does look better today but...
BTW, one of the best ways transport a cat for a not too long distance without the cruelty of a crate/cage, is to place them in a cotton pillowcase with their head out (obviously).
This way one can soothe them and they are in your lap and not totally confined. A large towel can work as well but the pillowcase is the better of the two.

Sadie's eye issue is the result of an optic rupture in the cornea common in elderly cats. It will cause no discomfort and it's appearance will improve but she will not have vision in that eye. I have some drops to apply so it doesn't get too dry. I have had two different animals go blind and they adapt amazingly well. One blind eye should not be a major handicap.
The ear issue is a simple build up of wax and gunk which he cleaned out and also gave me some drops for.

Our darling "homecoming queen" Sadie will be laid to rest this morning.
Quite suddenly she stopped eating and became weaker and weaker. Then her back legs started to give way. Renal failure.
My darling husband dug her grave this morning in the torrential rain. An image I will remember forever.
As a friend noted: how ironic that after disappearing for two months with us assuming she must be dead, she comes home to die in the bosom of her family. At 16 years old she had a good life.
RIP my dear girl.
