The whole area of the Great Lakes has always appealed to me while at the same time seeming as far from my own life as possible.

fumobici, yes it has. That is the year I moved here from the Detroit area. Back then everything closed at noon on Saturday and the only thing open on Sunday were a few restaurants and gas stations. Now we have two malls, almost every conceivable big box store, 4 or 5 each of McDonalds and Burger King and all the big supermarkets are open 24/7. But with all that, living along the beautiful golden sand beaches of Lake Michigan makes it all worth while. Today it is about 80 degrees with a little breeze that my American and Canadian flags are taking full advantage of (Today in Dominion Day in Canada) and the celestial sky painters only have azure on their palets today.
