I find this photo gallery particularly stunning.
Among the surprises for me after seeing so many westerns in my life is the fact that the pioneers were not clean shaven (movies in the 50's & 60's) or just a bit scruffy (movies from the 70's on), but in reality they had really nasty unkempt beards that were months old.
