Please make them stop the has-been variety show! If they don't drag that George Michael parody off stage, the UK is going to have to choose him as its Eurovision candidate next year.

The twitching cadaver of Annie Lennox almost finished me off. Thank god things got a bit better when Russell Brand and Fatboy Slim arrived...

And in the end it was Freddie Mercury who finished me off -- I went to bed.
Anyway, the Olympics were excellent, even if some countries still get caught cheating.

I agree, they were superb and all congratulations to Great Britain for giving the world a flawless presentation of the games! The news this morning is that only a handful of athletes will ever make any money out of the event from endorsements etc. Those that won medals in sporting events that are not crowd pullers will be forgotten almost immediately. I was pleased that South Africa at least got some medals so maybe we will shine even better in Brazil at the next games?? Kerouac, you made a comment about synchronized swimming - I can't stand it either. All that exaggerated face pulling, arms and legs twitching. Paleeeeees!

Today I was at Gare du Nord as the French paralympic team was boarding the Eurostar to London.

Was that merely coincidence - or planned? Lucky you in any case!

Just a coincidence -- and I really snapped the picture very quickly, because the station was completely surrounded by police and of course the inside was crawling with them.

yes, I am sad that they put the big screens down etc... the Paralympic games should be subject to the same oomph as their big brother. Someone asked why did they turn the flame off at the end of the Olympics?
(mind you if I had been paid every time someone exclaimed "why are all the announcements made in french first? bonkers!" ... I'd be able to pay my way into watching the games live...)
USAnians, you might be interested to know that your team was hosted on my uni campus. (because we have all the sports and clinic facilities, very close to the olympic stadium and that's why the last 12 months have been confusing at uni - they cut weeks off our semesters, moved exams dates, etc...)

Great photo, K.
I think I'd be steamed, auntiannie, if I were a knowledge seeking uni student.

I am not particularly happy about the way we were treated, but what can I say?

Well, when return cities get the Olympic games about 60 or 70 years, I guess the disruption is a small price to pay -- but it's true that the students should be taken into consideration as well. It's not as though they didn't have enough time to plan.

But it's not as if the students were doing something useful anyway. Just lazing about, cutting lessons, getting drunk and expecting someone to hand them a living.

Ooh, you've started something now. Who needs to watch wheelchair rugby when there's another re-run of this argument?!
On another note, I finally managed to get a ticket for Olympic Park access during the Paralympics (next Thursday) - no events, just to wander round the park. I'll take the camera to see if there are any photo opportunities you won't already have seen a million times on TV.

Who, me??
Never.
The Olympics in London are probably a once in a lifetime occurrence. Students have plenty of time to catch up if they missed something, never mind they probably suspended a lot of their studying anyway to watch the self same sport. It's not a great problem for a student to tack on an extra year at the end to re-take stuff they failed on. It'd give them another year of sitting on their arses pontificating before they leech off state benefits. Put them in the Army. Bring back conscription. That's what I say.

Well, the day before yesterday as I walked up Piccadilly (or was it Regent Street? -- I don't remember), I saw that a crowd was building. However, my feet hurt and I was still planning to drop in on Covent Garden where I bought a really cool gummy rat, and it was about to rain anyway. For those of you who think I should have waited, you will be pleased to know that the downpour arrived before I arrived at Covent Garden, and I was drenched.

And here I was waiting to see a picture of the torch There was a very nice article in yesterdays local paper about a 14 year old girl who will be participating as a swimmer. I'm sure she must be enjoying the excitement of being in London for the games. She has limited use of her arms and sounds like a very determined and focused young woman.
