How many countries have you been to? What places do you know intimately?
I've been to about 12. (I say about because I don't think I should count visiting a bunch of island countries for 10 hours each while on a cruise.)
I've been to about 20 states in the U.S. I know NYC and parts of California and Utah very well, but there will always be something completely new to me to explore. Especially in California, which is so enormous and wonderfully diverse.

Without doing a recount, I've been to at least 50 countries (but none in South America!), and it is easier for me to list the US states that I have NOT visited: North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan.
I will probably visit those 8 states all in the same trip, just to cancel the blemish.

I have only been to a few countries: Canada, USA, Mexico, islands in the Carribean, Spain, Portugal, France, and England. However, I've visited every state in the US except for Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia and Nebraska.

Keroauc and htmb, your U.S. travels are very impressive!
Askar, some of those countries are so exotic to me. I even had to look up Burkina Faso.

If I take it continent by continent, maybe I can make a list.
In Africa, I have been to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, Kenya, South Africa, Mauritius. I have also landed without leaving the plane in Mauritania, Eritrea and Somalia.

I realize I haven't been to all that many places compared to Askar's interesting ones: Canada (other than Toronto where I lived, Montreal, Ottawa and a bit of southern Ontario) US (NYC and Buffalo, New York, Austin, Texas) S America (Argentina & Chile x2, Ecuador, Colombia) Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Kenya) Europe (France, Portugal, Spain, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Italy, Netherlands, former Yugoslavia and current Croatia and Bosnia, Istanbul in Turkey)
upcoming: Budapest in September and Istanbul next year

Hey bjd, back from Budapest? How was it?

Really nice -- good atmosphere, pleasant people, reasonable prices for food and accommodation (at least where we stayed), and lots of great Art Nouveau type architecture. I will put up some pictures one of these days. Not at all "quaint", rather quite grandiose in places. And good spicy food - everything has paprika in it.
However the language is really difficult since it doesn't resemble any other that I could guess things from. But lots of young people and anyone dealing with tourism spoke very good English.
That said, we saw a couple of of what were probably nationalist gatherings but didn't really understand what was going on.

I'm wondering if it should be just 60 because I've counted South Sudan and Sudan as two countries.

Nope. Too close, not foreign enough and never really thought about it. That's how I feel about Australia/New Zealand except for being too far instead of too close.

Until 2009 I'd only ever been to Hamburg (on a training course). In 2009 I went on a cruise around the Western Mediterranean, 2010 another cruise to the Canary Islands and Morocco...but the only place I've stayed in for any length of time is Portugal. We've always taken holidays in the UK, places like Wales, Scotland and around England. My lack of travel experience has made me a little reticent to post on this forum. I do enjoy reading about the countries where you all live...it just makes me hesitant to post sometimes.

Cheery, I've only spent a week in England and a few days in Portugal. I've never been to Scotland, Wales, Morocco or the Canary Islands. You've been so many places I haven't, plus your experiences are bound to be different from mine. Please don't ever feel shy about posting. It's all new to me

Cheery, it's not where you go, it's the attitude you have when you do. I'd much rather be with someone and go somewhere local who is interested in the place and shows enthusiasm than an exotic place with a boring, world-weary git. So, I'd much rather read a post about somewhere just down the road that is done with open eyes and open mind than a post about a far off place made with a critical outlook. I, personally, do enjoy the grand picture, the Taj mahal etc - but I get more enjoyment, when I am away, from the day to day lives of people and the hidden histories and treasures that 'local' places have - just like ummmm, let me think, Leicester. Now there's an interesting town, seriously.
I've been lucky in that my work had sent me to most of the countries I've mentioned. Otherwise the list would be a lot shorter. Also though there are a number of countries like Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya that I went to up to a dozen times (I only went to Burkina Faso once though, like Askar).

Mark is right, Cheery. It's always good to see photos taken by someone who knows and likes a place, or discovers somewhere and shows it. I don't know England much at all and am always happy to see yours and Lugg's or Patrick's photos -- or anyone else's who is interested in what they are looking at.

Since I got my wings clipped six years ago, I have gone to a lot of places in France and some of the surrounding countries and often seen many amazing new things -- even sometime in Paris itself.

Oh and places I've been... India, UK, France, Canada and the USA. Not many, but I'm hoping to change that. Starting with India (again) soon. I'm planning to live in the UK for some time in the near future, so will see Europe (and other places) from there. Easier for me from here - South America. Also on my wish list. But I'm not the kind to be happy with just a packaged holiday for a week. There's enough beaches where I live to keep me happy. I will need to see it properly and that takes time and a hell of a lot of planning. But it's in the books. To me 'seeing' a place is more than just passing through though. I have to take time to be with the locals and study and get the feel of a place to say I really have 'traveled' there. So even this India trip will just be a taste in that respect.

Thanks, Deyana! Bangalore, IMO, doesn't have much to offer in terms of culture but it's a good place to check out the relatively new cosmopolitan lifestyle some Indians have started to enjoy.
Still, once known as the Garden City, Bangalore can be enjoyable if you have some time.
Enjoy your time in India!

Great! So what kind of things do you want to see? For greenery, head to Cubbon Park- and Lalbagh (botanical garden). The latter is generally well-kept. It has an annual flower show (August). Some photos of the one in 2011. Some roads in the city centre are full of trees and quaint- if you can, get on them on a Sunday morning (preferably in a vehicle, rather than on foot, because these are long, and not too pedestrian-friendly). For places to actually walk in, the CBD- around MG Rd, Brigade Rd, Church St, Residency Rd and around is a lively part of town.
