I doubt that the lily pads were actually grey.

It's been so long since I've seen a snake out in the wild -- about 20 years -- that I would probably freak out.

I doubt it, Kerouac. Those skills you learned growing up in Mississippi would come back in a second.

Odd this should appear today. Went for a walk this afternoon along the Canal du Midi with 2 neighbours. A snake wriggled across the path to get to the water and we all jumped a mile! All of us being afraid of them, even the harmless ones. It's the first time I see one here in the city.

When I was little and the area around the house was absolutely crawling with dangerous snakes, sometimes even in the garage or the mailbox (!), my mother would proudly assert "there are no snakes in France!" Of course I have discovered since then that it is not true. There are *almost* no snakes in northern France, but the south has quite a few vipers and other wriggling nasty things.
Of course one of the reasons I moved to France was because my mother always convinced me that it was so much better.

Are there poisonous snakes in France?
There are four different kinds here. I've encountered all four types at different times over the years. It's never fun, particularly when one pops up where you least expect it.

Vipers are poisonous but not deadly.

I'm sure, on the savannah, you couldn't even see him.

Wonderful example of camouflage, Htmb, and a striking, beautifully composed photograph as well.
