One of my favorite books is Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables." I've read it several times, though never the unabridged versions.
I've also really enjoyed watching the DVD of the twenty-fifth anniversary production of the musical performed at the O2. The grand scale production is fabulous, as well as the casting of Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean. I only wish I could have attended the performance in person.
So, now I'm wondering what the movie production, due out at Christmastime, will be like. It stars Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Hugh Jackman. Will it be any good?

You'll probably have to tell me about it because I am pretty much allergic to musicals. In any case, I see it doesn't come out in France until February 20th.

I don't often enjoy musicals in the movies either, Kerouac, nor do I like opera. I do like to see a good theater musical. I didn't care for the other versions of Les Misérables that I've seen on DVD, but the O2 version is a huge stage production and totally fascinates me. At times, there are over 500 performers on stage, and the simplicity, yet effectiveness, of the set allows someone who doesn't know the story to immediately know the location of events. I suppose the fact that I also love the story makes a difference. I'm not sure how I will feel about the new musical movie version, but I imagine I will see it and will be happy to report back.

I'm not an avid fan of musicals, but I like the story as well. The problem with movie musicals is they often star big names with little musical background. But I think Hugh Jackman has the chops to pull off the role. I saw him in a musical on Broadway, and the man can really sing and dance. Although I don't think Jean Valjean has any big dance numbers.

I do like Hugh Jackman very much. I think he has a lot of great energy. I like Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, as well. Perhaps it's the whole musical/film part I'm not sure about. And, Russell Crowe can sing? I had no idea.
