No street food near Roman monuments

Many of you have probably seen the news reports about the new law to prevent people from eating in the street anywhere near the major monuments of Rome. Fines range from 25 to 500 euros. Here is a report.

Tomorrow, a flash mob protest is planned.

Actually, I read a follow-up report in France that this is actually a devious way to expel Roma beggars from the city center. Apparently, quite a few of them live in more or less permanent positions camped out on the sidewalks near some of the major monuments. If they can't eat there, they won't stay. At least that's the theory.

That's absolutely ridiculous. Don't the police have anything better to do? And the line "we don't need signs, it obvious you can't eat near monuments" is beyond stupid.

I never noticed Roma beggars in Rome in any of the tourist centers. In fact the only encampment I saw was under a bridge over the Tiber pretty well out of view of any likely tourists.

There used to be Roma beggars in the railway station, but I saw no more the last time I was there.
