was released in South Africa on Friday, we went to see it today. I have to say I am a bit dissapointed.
It was an enjoyable movie, but I am not sure what the hype is all about and I am not even sure it deserved an Oscar.
Another movie that we watched, and loved, also made in India, Taare Zaneem Par, was streets ahead of this movie (imho) (2007) and did not even get noticed internationally.
Maybe I was expecting too much because of all the hype.
Have you seen it, what was your opinion?

It was certainly not the best movie of the year, but it was most likely the one that corresponded the most to the mood of the day. A similar year would have been the one during which Rocky won best picture -- hard to believe now!

The only good thing about the film was that it showed the horrendous slum conditions that millions of people are forced to endure. I found the 'Who wants to be a millionaire' contest trite and boring.

Spindrift, I agree and I am glad that the world has seen the conditions of those slums. I would hope that some of hte profits of the movie will in some way try to improve conditions or at least continue to raise awareness.

I cannot resist to a happy ending love story with a beautiful actress so I couldn't not like Slumdog Millionaire but I don't think it deserved an Oscar.
I find the structure of the movie - question/flashback; question/flashback - too repetitive and much of the story lacks credibility. Like the arrest of Jamal: if there were suspicion of fraud, all the staff of the show would have been interrogated, not only the contestant. And why would the host want to arrest him in the first place when the show is breaking audience records?
I loved the end credit sequence (the dance in the station) - a real find.

As mentioned before, I really enjoyed it. Guess it was the rythm, and India and all the positive vibes.
K2, what did you think of Chicago? I personally didn't think it was worth an oscar at the time. It was, like slumdog, all about entertainment.

I did not see Chicago. I am generally allergic to musicals, with a few exceptions (Cabaret, for example).

Musicals: I saw Slumdog a few nights ago. It's okay. The kids in it were terrific. I thought the leading man was really good in the part. No take on the leading lady, as she didn't really have that much to do. One thing that struck me in the dance scene at the end was the fact that she's not much of a dancer. The girl who played her as a young adolescent was a dancer, but the grownup Lakita came across as an actress who'd been taught a few steps. The guy (- Patel) was quite good and a revelation after his very solemn depiction of the main character.

This movie is still doing great box office business in Europe, and it continues to be touted as a fabulous "feel good" movie. While I agree that it makes one feel good at the end, I can't imagine wanting to see it a second time, because I don't want to go through all of the torment of slum life again before you arrive at the happy ending.
Once was enough.

I finally saw it last night and it wasn't exceptional. Certainly, I wouldn't put it on my 'must see again list'. Movies I love I may buy a copy, or see them often. I did enjoy it. I wasn't disappointed because I suspected it was overhyped. In a sense it was a 'feel good' film, (good for the the male lead and his girlfriend), but this designation seems to ignore the depiction of the slums and the lives of those who live there. The bollywood ending was a letdown, I have seen many Indian films with fantastic dance sequences, this was mediocre.

I think the whole point of the dance sequence was for it to be 'mediocre' -- unprofessional real people dancing for fun. I am sorry that a lot of people didn't get that.

The point was to be mediocre? Perhaps. Maybe I should describe it differently. I have seen beautiful, vital yet unpracticed, or amateurish...and that was just fine, or, simply joyous and wonderful. This felt flat. I was disappointed because the part that was touted the most in anything I read or heard was the ending.
