Port of Tampa

I had a meeting to attend in downtown Tampa today and, since I arrived a few minutes early, I was able to take a few photographs of the Port of Tampa area on the south side of downtown. This area has been rebuilt over the past thirty years, but it certainly played an important role in my childhood, as well as in the lives of many family members.
My home was approximately one mile from this area. My grandfather was a plumber in the shipyards here, and I had family members who were instrumental in reviving a decaying industrial port and turning it into a multi-use area.
This is the section of Tampa that hosted the 2012 Republican National Convention. As you can see, this part of town sits right on the deep channels of Tampa Bay at the mouth of the Hillsborough.
Commercial cruise lines began sailing out of the port 25 - 30 years ago.
The Tampa Bay Times Forum has been used for ice hockey, basketball, musical concerts, and arena football.
There are now many condominiums across the channel on Harbor Island, and it has become a very exclusive place to live.
Looking southwest, we can see Tampa General Hospital on Davis Island. Many of my family's births, deaths, routine surgeries, and illnesses took place in that hospital. It amazes me that a hospital, built on a reclaimed island and cut off from the mainland except for one bridge, continues to grow in size and in the number of patients.
I did not get a photo of the convention center, but it's located basically on the other side of this hotel.
I will have to go back one day to take more photos.
