Actually, I don't get night sweats in the way that I understand the concept -- the entire body soaked with sweat, often requiring a change of sheets in the middle of the night. Yes, it has happened to me once or twice, but only when I already knew I was really sick with the winter flu. But one thing that appears to happen at random to me are "head sweats" in the night. They don't seem to be linked to any physical condition that I can identify or even what I ate or drank for dinner. But sometimes my head just seems to catch on fire, and I wake up with the pillow totally soaked and my entire head dripping. And that is the only real discomfort for me, because there is nothing more horrible than a wet pillow! I have learned to keep a bath towel nearby to either cover the pillow or (sometimes) wrap my head. I have just learned to live with it; it doesn't happen too often, but I don't like it!

This happens to me as well Kerouac. Perhaps mine is hormonal, but I also think it is if I have consumed a little too much salt or red wine. I have reduced both and I have noticed a difference, but then my hormones could have changed again... Either way, I am happy right now they are not as bad as they have been the last few years. It was so frustrating waking up with soaking wet hair and a wet pillow!

It's not uncommon. There are all sorts of possible causes, including, lucky you, your genes set you up for it. Unfortunately, some of the possible causes are serious. Head night sweats. The answer is from a doctor.

Yes, well I just always assumed it was encephalitis interacting with a brain tumor, so I'm ready for anything.

Kerouac, the situation is probably nothing to be concerned about, but if this condition is new to you, rather than something that's been happening off and on for years, I would certainly hope you would discuss it with your medical professional.

Perhaps you have had an increase in salt in your diet Casi?

I just had one case since I first brought up the subject -- a case of head sweats. I woke up one night with the pillow soaked and sweat running down my face. Other than that, absolutely no problem. So I just did the same as always in such a situation -- I wrapped my head in a nice fresh bath towel and went back to bed.

Perhaps you have had an increase in salt in your diet Casi? I don't think so Mich.... I do need to hydrate more, that's for certain, i don't drink nearly as much water as I should....

Yes, drinking more water should help Casi. I have difficulty as well sometimes but I have recently been making an effort to drink at least 4 full glasses a day. I do not think I could ever do the recommended 8!

I couldn't do 8 either. I would spend half my day in the bathroom....

Frankly, I think that the liquid "needs" of normal human beings in normal temperatures have been wildly exaggerated. And it was perhaps done on purpose to get people to drink 4 glasses of water.

Well, that makes me feel better that I am probably doing what may only be required. I do not want to stretch out my aging bladder unnecessarily. But I have noticed the sweats are far less now that I am focusing on 4 glasses and being careful about salt intake.

The link that Nutrax posted makes mention of thyroid issues among other things. The thyroid thing could very well hold true for me as thyroidism, hypo and or hyper is rampant on my mother's side of the family. I get mine checked annually and am due for another test coming up soon so we'll see if indeed it is out of whack.

about the drinking - 4 or 8 glasses of what size?
i try for 3 litres of liquid per day these days, as my gyn said i should do that as long as i breast feed. i usually manage at least 2 and a half. but yes, i do go to the loo a lot.

The fact that they never say what size glass is one of the main reasons that I think that these "rules" are not very serious.

I somehow seem to remember that it is 8, 8 ounce glasses recommended.

My body decided to sweat something out last night. I had to get up in the middle of the night to get a bath towel to put over my pillow because my head was dripping. But when I wasn't waking up from being unpleasantly sweaty in my bed, I had the compensation of a very interesting night of "fever dreams."

So, are you sick, or just experiencing a bit of a "spell?"

No, I don't think I'm sick. It was a borderline attack of something.
