The new diversity Barbies are available online now, and will be in stores in March. They come in 3 body types: Tall, Petite and Curvy, and multiple (7) skin tones, 22 eye colors (!) and 24 hair types, including kinky. I saw an array of 20 or more new Barbies on TV, and they were actually quite lovely. A rainbow coalition of interesting-looking "girls" you'd like to be friends with. Barbie may have finally risen to her full potential.

The French news showed all of the different shapes, too. It is kind of sad, though, when so much media attention is devoted to dolls.
I would be much more interested in the reason why the children of so many "dark" countries choose to have pink dolls. I know it is "our" fault, but I would really like to know if the parents contribute to it or if it comes from media images, television and movies. I should add that everywhere that I have ever travelled anywhere in the world had major displays of cute pink baby postcards on sale even when there is no possibility that any local babies could look like that. Obviously, somebody buys those postcards.

I was a little dark haired child and I know I preferred my dolls to have dark hair, so you'd think all the non Euro-pale kids in the world would want their dolls to look more like themselves.

I've heard that some "dark" kids are already so negative about their own racial identity that they don't WANT dark-skinned dolls. It needs to begin earlier, with diversity in baby dolls....

Yesterday's NY Times Travel section highlighted the opening of a new museum. "It's all Barbie, all the time. Located in downtown Montreal, Barbie Expo, claims to be home to the largest permanent exhibit of Barbie dolls in the world. There are over1,000 on display, and each is a one-of-a-kind creation. Some of the dolls are dressed by famous fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani and Caroline Herrera. Admission is free."

( I am told that I cannot enter Canada because of a criminal record (misdeameanor)

You might want to sneak in before they build their wall. Too COLD, cold hurts. Have my sights set on Costa Rica, Mexico Yucatan) and Nicaragua at this point. And, I never want to lay real life eyes on Poutine !!! EVER!!!!
And,I strongly resent that Canadians can enter the US with past felony charges.

A Barbie has never crossed my threshold, I was never one for dolls and had sons, not daughters. My only doll was made of dark brown velvet, with short curly hair and a "grass" skirt made of red and green strips of velvet, as were her anklets and bracelets. Small brass hoop earrings and a realistically painted face. I called her Salome and was the only girl at school to have a "black" doll. We didn't do dress-ups but she went with me on 'adventures'.

Salome was a beautifully made "Chad Valley" doll sent over from England for me. In spite of this I cut her tummy open to take out her 'pen dicks' and treated her with Dad's eye drops in the wound. After the parental hysterics died down, Mum took her to a 'Dolls' Hospital' where she was professionally repaired, and I grew up to become a nurse.
Yesterday I Googled Chad Valley and looked at their old dolls...no Salome though. Coincidentally, the hotel I am booked into for my stay in Zanzibar in September is Princess Salme Inn...the local spelling.
I have wondered if my ease at fitting in with non-white cultures in my travels owes anything to having only a dark brown 'African' doll as a child.

My sister was given a black baby doll at one of her early birthday parties. Interestingly, the giver of this black baby was the only boy invited to her party. (But of course parents do all the gift shopping/wrapping when kids are young.)

Even if his mother chose the black baby doll she was showing the lad and others some pretty good values for the times.

Yes, back brace from the horrific tram-bus accident, one leg longer than the other from the polio. I could also go back to Merkel Barbie and her utter lack of middle-age spread (being of her cohort). Oh well, better Merkel Barbie than Klaus Barbie.
casimira, I'm afraid we can never meet. I can travel anywhere else. Arrested at a demonstration or something. They didn't tell me, but insinuated that it was something political. Decades ago. Fortunately there are direct flights from here to CDMX now.

By the way, I never had a Barbie either. I did have some dolls but never liked them very much. I preferred my stuffed cats. I had some little Steiff tabbies and tigers, and at least one black cat. I want this one! www.ikea.com/ca/fr/catalog/products/50344203/ Next time I go to IKEA.

Barbie marks her 60th anniversary this year.
As previously mentioned her appearance has become very diversified.
She is available in 7 different body types, 11 skin tones, 28 hairstyles and prosthetic limbs AND wheelchairs are now available for her to move around in if need be.
(P.S. Lagatta, several years ago I was doing a garden maintenance job for a commercial property. Next door to the property I was working on was a high end toy store. They had just received a delivery and had put the boxes out on the curbside. I went to pick up one to use for the weeds and waste and inside I found several rolled up pieces of packaging paper which contained a half dozen or more Steiff stuffed animals which had obviously been overlooked. I have to admit I was tempted to "snitch" one but, I didn't. I went to the store and in my dirty ragged garden attire told one of the clerks what I had discovered. She treated me with such hostility, did not thank me, and was extremely ungracious. It really made me wish I had "snitched" one after that exchange!!. I happen to know how ungodly expensive those "toys" cost and all total there were several hundred dollars worth of merchandise overlooked, likely by the woman I dealt with.)

agnes got a barbie from somewhere ages ago, but rarely played with it, she usually prefers dressing up, or playing with her paw patrol toys or similar. recently, though, she said that the reason she never plays with it is because you can't play with only one barbie, you need more ... so the other day when mr. r. took her to the flea market (he does that occasionally, we have kind of different ideas about the appropriate number of random plastic toys), she chose another barbie and a horse and huge pink carriage and a surfbord/mermaid tail for the barbie. she did spend the rest of that day playing with them ... i think the interest was also inspired to one of her friends (a boy) who sometimes brings his barbies to daycare ...

Eeeeeee ~ we have to hop on this! Barbie's Malibu Dream House for full-size dolls (that's us!) will be briefly available. That means all of us have to try to get it and whoever the winner is has to choose her three guests from the anyport pool. (although I think it would be okay if one of the guests chosen was Agnes) www.tmz.com/2019/10/17/barbie-malibu-dreamhouse-hits-airbnb-first-time-ever/

I'm disappointed, Bixa. Never thought you would read something like that. Almost as bad as the Daily Mail.
That said -- only 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms? You mean you have to share the place?

I am wondering who is going to occupy the other two deck chairs in the photo. Are rent boys being called in?
I look at both tmz and justjared from time to time. It is important to know what other people find important.
