Alot of Canadians I know go to the US to shop, take advantage of the shopping outlets in Minnesota while also taking in the sites around Minnneapolis/St. Paul. If I lived in such a cold climate, I would surely head to the tropics, even Florida or California, anywhere but that frigid an environ. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

As Lagatta has stated people from our region in Canada frequent Cuba and Dominican Republic. Last year two flights a week actually began departing from our small city for these destinations. Many of our friends and family are scheduled for these destinations. We have never vacationed in the winter so I can not advise about these destinations.
We are also too far away from the border to take advantage of any cross border shopping. I think I would enjoy that though!

I don't think cross-border shopping is as popular here as in some other places - Montréal has a beautiful offer of all kinds of shopping, and I'd find it easier to wait and hit the sales than traipse to much less sophisticated places just south of the border such as Plattsburg (and I don't have a car - in years past tour buses went down there but I'd sooner die than be a party to that). People travelling to NYC and picking up some fashions there is a different matter, but New Yorkers and Bostonians also visit here for that purpose.
I've never been to Cuba, where some friends travel regularly, nor to the Dominican Republic.
I hate being cold, but am not necessarily interested in the tropics. The regions that can grow wine grapes and olives appeal to me most.

I looked up the international travel list for the United States in 2012:
1. Mexico (20.1 million) 2. Canada (11.6 million) 3. United Kingdom (2.4 million) 4. France (1.8 million) 5. Italy (1.7 million)

Yes, Cuba, Mexico and the Caribbean are popular destinations from Canada for sure.
Lagatta's post reminded me of what a friend of mine told me a while back. He is a German man who has been living in Spain for over 20 years. He stated that some European men come over to Spain especially for the intend of riding 'bare-back' (without the use of condoms) with prostitutes, and yes some of these girls are very young - teenagers. It makes me wonder if they think that by going with girls that young they may be spared from catching HIV? Not the case, not only is it spreading, but these men go back home and give to their unsuspecting wives. Sad state of affairs, but that is the reality of if.
Canada is a beautiful country and has everything that I want. But is has very cold winters! But on a plus side, we have do get proper seasons, Spring, Summers (which are long, sunny and hot where I am), lovely rustic Autumns too.

Thanks for your answer, Deyana. I wish we had proper seasons here- everything maybe except for the Monsoons, feels like summer...

anshjain, well of course you can find some spectacular wintry weather in your huge country, but you have a very long journey to at least the foothills of the Himalayans!
