Today I'm slow. I just realized that the penny is there to show scale. So, I think that the Coptic cross is a pendant.

Jazz, you may want to read back through the thread a little.

You are getting very warm...yes, it does have to do with fishing of sorts... But not actually fishing. More 'fishing' as in trying to find/get/grab hold of something. Do you reach in to something, and is it to do with any animal/fish at all or is it for inanimate objects?

You're welcome.
Is it something to do with rubbish collection? Or picking up something you don't want to use your hands for?

You guys are pretty close,it's a narrowing down now. I will say, these aren't used a lot,and I found a site where people were having difficulty purchasing them, they are pretty obscure, but in demand.(I am referring to the contemporary models. Mine is definitely in the collectible category of). Also, I believe, fairly regional, best I can tell.

I asked at post 83 if it was to do with fishing nets. I am mortified! I'm always annoyed with people who don't read back far enough in a thread.

some sort of harpoon for maybe what, a whale?
|

Post by Deleted on Mar 20, 2010 9:25:57 GMT
No Gertie,'fraid not a harpoon for a whale...although curiously enough, the place where this item was acquired,a small village in the U.S. NE,was at one time, a major harbor and well known for whale hunting back in the 17,1800's. There is even a whaling museum there with some very old harpoons and my favorite museum item in there is an ivory tusk,I guess you would call it,from a Narwhal whale, like a unicorn.(Of course, I am vehemently opposed to the slaughter of most animals,so,how it was acquired,I don't approve of,but to see it close up, it is exquisite). But,I digress,as usual ...

It looks like it's for spearing flesh. The tines are shaped so that they won't pull out easily. Ouch.

Yes,Spindrift, you are right on,but,I don't think fish technically speaking. Let me go check. It's very specific a creature it is designed to catch.
Yes,they are classified as a fish.(I just checked)

Post by Deleted on Mar 20, 2010 21:10:38 GMT
No. Look at it more closely and look at the hooks. Picture how they would most effectively be utilized and it will give you a better idea.( I hope)

Post by spindrift on Mar 20, 2010 21:42:37 GMT
the hooks would grab the net which is already around the fish and then the net could be pulled tight around the captured fish?

Oh yay! Do I win a prize? ;D I have a mystery object or 2 to post. Are there rules about posting them? Only Mark started the thread,I don't think, best I can tell, there are any rules. As for a prize, well, consider outwitting some of the sharper minds on APIAS a prize indeed.!!
