Strawberries are in season here. A man came through my neighborhood with a truck full of them a couple of days ago -- 20 pesos per kilo ($1.55US for 2.2 pounds) They were insanely fresh -- the little leaves looked as though they were still growing. The strawberries were meatily red all the way through & even the less sweet ones were full of strawberry flavor.
Went to the Abastos yesterday & they were everywhere for 15 pesos a kilo. The market smelled great!

I'm sort of looking forward to getting to post in this thread. Since there was rarely anything truly "in season" in Phoenix, I never had much to brag about other than cactus pads. Living for the moment in Pasadena, CA, where there is ( I am told), a fantastic Saturday farmer's market so I hope to visit this weekend. I also hope to find the camera battery and the usb cable for the camera, neither of which were within my sights when I was packing to drive here.

Ifyou don't find them, Cristina, you could take out the memory card, insert it into a card reader (they're not expensive) and then 'read' the pics through your card reader on your PC or laptop. Good to see you back!

A lot of computers have a built in card reader as standard. I didn't realise mine had until recently when I wondered what the little slot was for.

Thanks HW and Mark. Thanks to you, I did find the slot on my PC so can upload pics. I had no idea it was even there. But I think I'm going to have to go hunt down a battery charger somewhere since there are no future pictures to be had otherwise. And while I know this page is dedicated to what is in season, I can't resist posting a picture I found on that card (over a year old, sadly). Let's just say that miniature dachshunds that just were spayed and are sort of drugged up are in season. I promise, my next photo will be of actual food. While Coco is a little wiener dog, she is not actually edible.

I can still hear his voice calling "STRAW -- Berries!" Imagine drawing out the sound between straw and berries, in a Virginia sort of way. He peddled other berries through the year but it is the strawberry voice that I can recall instantly. A happy memory.

Lovely memory, Cristina.
Those mini-dachs are absolutely adorable. Hope you get another battery so we can see Coco updates.

We're seeing cool-season vegetables in the market -- broccoli, cauliflower, green peas, & fava. And, swiss chard must be in season. You won't believe the amount I bought for 5 pesos. The bunch filled a 17" x 20 1/2" bag. Here are pics. When the leaves were lying down, they came to the top of this strainer. In the picture, they're standing up in order to drain better. Measuring tape is in inches.

Luscious little red plums. A local lady comes by and sells them, 10 pesos the bag. We have just been eating them out of hand.

Are those softshell crabs casimira? I love them but almost never see them. I've never had any fresh ones to cook for myself. And are those some kind of heirloom tomato?

Yes, those are soft shells, and fresh they are, were. We had 2 each for dinner tonite, served Meuniere style. And, yes, those are some kind of heirloom tomatoes, they weren't labelled. I didn't get any. We have plenty fresh tomatoes of our own and from neighbors and friends gardens. The last pic is of purple hull beans. Pretty, pretty.

Apparently they're in season in New York too! I was delighted to hear the waiter announce these as the special on Thursday night - they were wonderful! (sorry - lousy pic from a lousy phone)

I'm waiting for gooseberries to come into season here (it's about the right time of year) so I can get some in the freezer, and also make jam. But I fear our rotten weather this year may have put the kibosh on gooseberries.

That looks yum Imec. I had always thought that soft shell crab season in NY was later in the summer. Who knows these days with advanced farming techniques when or what season it is where?
I haven't had gooseberries in eons...or cloud berries either. Fond fond memories of growing up with both readily available.
Our fig season is looking grimmer and grimmer. I have a ton of them but, they are teensy weensy. I scoped out some trees last evening and the same. One of my favorite hot spots has little to no figs on it. It appears they over pruned it IMHO.
This may well be the year of the elderberry however. I have never seen as many blooms as I have this year.

I wish I loved this stuff, but I don't. I will eat it all without comment, but I have never learned to appreciate eggplant, squash, zucchini, etc. I refuse to give up on it, though, because I continue to buy it from time to time, but I have not succeeded in fixing it in a way I like, except for
-- courgette crumble (but not too much of it) -- creamed in soup (I can eat unlimited amounts of soup no matter what the ingredients)

#561 = pure vegetable beauty!
Much as I love eggplant, I can actually understand how someone wouldn't care for it.
Kerouac, I strongly recommend that you give caponata a try. Make it yourself if you can't find a good version.
Also, try cooking any squash in a light tomato sauce, maybe with some end rinds or cubes of romano or parmesan cheese tossed in.

I had some Japanese plums today. They are not in season, but my tree doesn't fully understand that. Mostly the tree has either blooming flowers or bloomed out ones presumably on their way to becoming loquats. Nevertheless, at the tip of one branch were several quite yummy ripe ones.

I giggle every time I come to this page and see CoCo's legs sticking up in the air....The first figs of the season!!!!!! I picked these yesterday and have eaten half and will finish them off tomorrow a.m. They are a tad smaller than previous years but much much sweeter than I ever recall. The next picking will go into a clafouti for a neighbor's birthday.
