Thérèse desqueyroux. Aka Folcoche. Key character of the book Vipère au poing, largely autobiographical, that every student of my age had to read at school. Nice reading though.

This intrigued me & I looked up the book. At what age did students have to read the book? If mid-school, 13, 14, 15, that is pretty impressive, considering the themes covered in the book.

The French internet tells me that it is suitable starting at age 9, but it is studied in "3ème" - 9th grade to Americans.

The 3rd in France corresponds to the 3rd in Belgium ! France : primary school CP. Ce1 CE2CM1 CM2 then college 6-5-4-3-2-1 then baccalaureat. Belgium : primary : 1-2-3-4-5-6. Secondary (lycee college or Athénée) 1-2-3-4-5_6.
I must have read it at 3rd. Or when I was 13 or 14.

That sounds a far more horizon- and literature-exanding book assignment than anything I was offered at that age. Fortunately, I loved to read & was encouraged to, so got to go beyond the dreary offering of To Kill a Mockingbird, considered worthy for that 13--14 year old age group.
