That song reminded me that each generation loses a great deal of the popular music from @two generations before it. I know that song (all the words!) because my mother would sing it & play it on the piano. Since she was born in 1927, I imagine she learned it from her father (b.1892), who liked to sing popular music of his era & showboat songs that he remembered from his childhood. Because of him, I know "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead", "Irene, Goodnight", stuff like that. From my other grandfather -- via my mother -- I know "In the Garden" and "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover". My son knows lots of popular music of my generation because so much of it is still being played as golden oldies. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

That song reminded me that each generation loses a great deal of the popular music from @two generations before it. . I know what you mean. My mother's father (b. 1867) was in a lot of choral groups as was my mother (b.1905). An awful lot of old parlour ballads, music hall songs and parodies came down from them. Plus, my mother had the habit of bringing into conversation odd snippets of poetry or songs that seemed relevant: whenever the TV drama or film had an obvious rotter sweet-talking the innocent young ingenue, my mother would start singing The Gypsy's Warning ("Do not trust him, gentle maiden"). I suppose that's what the pianist for the silent movies used to play to such a scene.

Thanks, Patrick ~ I figured you'd know what I meant! Also, I finally know the source of "Do not trust him, gentle maiden".
Your mention of the choral groups triggered a memory ~
In 1969 I lived in Pacific Grove, California. There was a very old German lady living across the street, who was a total kick. She was lively & flirtatious and had a really amazing hobby. One room of her house was empty except for several rows of shallow shelves running around the room. The shelves held the figures she'd crocheted. She must have done it with super fine thread, as each figure was of a character from the funny papers and all perfectly wrought & instantly identifiable. But the pertinent thing about her, as far as music goes, was that her girlhood was in Brooklyn and she would talk about the wonderful times that young people had when she was a girl, with their choral groups and sometimes being in the street all night talking and singing.
