Last night there was a burglary at the museum of natural history in Paris, and more precisely the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution. The burglar entered the museum with a chainsaw and cut off a tusk of the skeleton of Louis XIV's elephant, who lived a long and probably happy life in the gardens of Versailles.
Apparently, the alarm system finally started making so much noise that the burglar fled after having cut off one tusk. He abandoned the chainsaw in the museum.
Anyway, he was arrested and the tusk was recovered. I presume that they will glue it back on. The burglar was in his 20's and it can only be assumed that he was hopelessly misinformed -- the ivory of such a tusk could only have been sold for about 100 euros on the black market and it is hard to imagine that any "collector" would be interested in owning just a tusk for the inestimable historical value without any way to authentify it.
The evening news showed a picture of the skeleton with the severed tusk, but all of the news sites are just displaying a stock photo of one of the stuffed elephants displayed in the museum and not at all the skeleton which was vandalized.
Why are people so stupid and crazy?
