Assuming that everybody accepts that the top movie stars are the ones seen by the most spectators around the world, you probably can't guess who the top star is.
It isn't, for example, Marion Cotillard, Jean Reno, Catherine Deneuve or Jean Dujardin. It isn't even Sophie Marceau or Alain Delon who are superstars in Japan and Korea.
The top French movie star in the world is Kalki Koechlin, one of the top draws of Bollywood films. She was born in Pondicherry because her parents are followers of the Sri Aurobindo cult and live in Auroville. So she speaks French, English, Tamil and has learned Hindi for the movies. At age 29, she has already made 10 Bollywood films with two or three more in the works, and she has won two awards as best supporting actress already.
She has married an Indian director and screenwriter.
Rather than a film clip, I thought I would link a Coca-Cola commercial that she made, which is perhaps a truer sign of celebrity.

[...] Rather than a film clip, I thought I would link a Coca-Cola commercial that she made, which is perhaps a truer sign of celebrity. even at gunpoint, I couldn't name a single person who has 'starred' in a Cola commercial - sure this is a good measuring stick? and given that Indian movies are not as popular abroad as they are at home, I'd question whether the number of Indian spectators alone would outweigh the combined worldwide audience of those Hollywood blockbusters. further, IMO to be considered a 'star', you'll need several noteworthy leading appearances, IMDB implies Mrs. Koechlin so far largely did supporting business - I guess we should wait some more before awarding her that title. so thanks for the eye candy, however I'll prefer the gals here at APiaS any day ;D

It doesn't look like she has much to say in her movies.

It doesn't look like she has much to say in her movies. so perhaps we could label her 'biggest contemporary French mostly-silent movie star' then? auntieannie and lola: you've just proved my point!
