Elandslaagte Is a farming and coal-mining centre. In Afrikaans the name means 'elands flat'. it was the scene of the Battle of Elandslaagte, one of the first battles of the Second Anglo-Boer War, on 21 October 1899. The brother of Vincent Van Gogh the famous Dutch artist - Cornelis Vincent 'Cor' van Gogh, also fought in the battle where he was wounded and taken prisoner. He died shortly after. He lies buried in a field somewhere.
