(Gotham is a real place in Nottinghamshire. My grandparents lived there. It is pronounced as Goat-ham and comes from the Old English for "goat home". In the DC Universe, in Batman, Bill Finger (creator of Batman) named New York after the village in England and it was referenced as such several times - even Robin did say, "We could call it 'Gotham' after a village in England – where, according to common belief, all are bereft of their wits."
This is from an alleged incident where - "The village is most famed for the stories of the "Wise Men of Gotham". These depict the people of the village as being stupid. However, the reason for the behaviour is believed to be that the villagers wished to feign madness to avoid a Royal Highway being built through the village, as they would then be expected to build and maintain this route. Madness was believed at the time to be highly contagious, and when King John's knights saw the villagers behaving as if insane, the knights swiftly withdrew and the King's road was re-routed to avoid the village."
Lastly, when I was 11 years old my English teacher, not from Nottinghamshire, read a story to us about this, and called the village as generally known, i.e. Gotham. I tried to correct her but she wasn't having it. In my last school year when I was eighteen the same teacher was reading the same story to the first years in a classroom in the 6th form I was in. I was sitting in a comfy chair nearby studying and heard her say the same mispronunciation. I waited until she had finished and dismissed the class and said to her the same thing about it is said as Goat-ham and I wonder if you remember that I mentioned it many years ago when I was a first former but I hope now you believe me. She did remember but I have no idea if she changed her ways from then on.
Please carry on............)
