I just heard on the news that 2 bombs went off this afternoon at the Boston Marathon finish line. At least 3 killed and many injuries. I'm sure there will be more to come on this shocking news.

What a vicious thing to do to such a peaceful, pleasant encounter. People come from the world over for that. (I say "come", I guess, as Montréal and Boston aren't far apart in the grand scheme of things).
I tried to copy the live blog/video from the Boston Globe, but it didn't want to copy. Typing in Boston Globe should take you directly to it.
To make matters worse (if possible) Newton massacre survivor families were seated in the VIP section very close to the explosion. Hope they are all safe, but what an echo trauma.

What a positively evil thing to do, product of a warped mind. Does Mass have the death penalty, because this is all these maniacs deserve

I always wonder how all of the misinformation gets around. Practically only a few minutes after the bombs went off, they were talking about other unexploded bombs that had been defused. And now they are saying that these other bombs don't exist -- yet the "news" went around the world.

No, Massachusets abolished the death penalty (being a civilised place). There is no way perpetrators of such a heinous act could ever get a "punishment fitting the crime" as they would have to have been blown apart at eight years old, or get their legs ripped off as they were taking part in their running passion.
Some former mass-murdering dictatorships (such as Argentina) are very proud to have eliminated the death penalty, as is Rwanda. They don't want to fall to the level of such people, whether "state or non-state actors" (as we say discussing atrocities in conferences).
By the way, the London marathon is this weekend.

Such heartbreaking news. I can't help but think how my husband use to work in a building near the finish line when he lived in Boston, and currently works in area that is a prime target for terrorists. I always wonder how all of the misinformation gets around. Practically only a few minutes after the bombs went off, they were talking about other unexploded bombs that had been defused. And now they are saying that these other bombs don't exist -- yet the "news" went around the world. From what I understand, they did find evidence of bombs that went off in controlled detonations. There was also a fire in the JFK library that was originally reported as a bomb. So far, there is very little to go on. The authorities don't even know yet if this is the work of an international terrorist or a homegrown one.

The French news has been emphasizing the possibilities of home-grown: what with Patriot's Day, filing dates for income tax, the anniversary of the Omaha bombing, anti-federalists, etc.

Same here BJD. "A person of interest" phrase keeps popping up and the authorities raided house in nearby Revere, a suburb of Boston.

Absolutely dreadful and appalling.
I wonder what their misguided motives were ?

I'm watching the news now, the police seem to have the suspect cornered right this minute. They're trying to get him to surrender because they want him alive.
Update: they got him.
