The Cour du Commerce Saint André is one of the only passages on the Left Bank, and it predates the creation of the covered passages, which explains why most of it is not covered. It was created in 1776 and among the famous people who lived there was Danton, of revolutionary fame. In case you are wondering, you will be relieved to know that I have just about exhausted all of the possibilities for this subject, even if I have a few more left.

This is the passage I have wandered through several times as I was headed elsewhere. I pity any woman trying to walk it in heels.

Such a lovely thread Kerouac. I have been wanting to see that tin(copper?) man slaying the dragon for years and never got there - now you tell me it hasn't worked for years! Oh well, still worth a visit I guess...
I like the look of the busy Cour du Commerce St.Andre with it's sidewalk cafe`s.
The very first passage I ever went on the hunt for was Passage LHomme, 26 rue De Charonne, in the Faubourg. I was tentative and nervous walking down this alley of workshops but no-one paid us a blind bit of notice. I'm not sure if this was the passage where the little corgi dog came out to say hello to passersby... I'ts not a Passage as in the covered passages, but just a cut through old long ago furniture factories that once reeked of sawdust and varnish.
Kerouac I hope you've got more?

I really enjoyed travelling through these Parisian passages, K2, thank you.
Strangely the place that came to mind as I viewed them was a place that I do know well, Cardiff, which has some very similar passages, albeit much less well known.

thanks for this great report, kerouac, so far I only knew a tiny fraction of these places - great joy and lots of ideas for future visits...

Paris is forever an intriguing and interesting place. And I really like the way you show us other less known areas of the City, Kerouac. And I really appreciate that you take the time to go into detail about the area.

I skipped a few places in the Madeleine area because they are of limited interest. But since I am running out of passages, here they are now.

The Marché de la Madeleine may have actually started out as a market in the 1950's, but it clearly did not succeed. It has become a food centre for local workers... if you dare to continue along the way. For example, one would not spontaneously go marching through these doors. At least I wouldn't. The restaurants were not open during my visit. For me, these will always be passages if they lead out onto a different street.

Oh, nice. The Luthier in Galerie Vero-Dodat is where Bob spent a long pleasant morning in January, playing his dream guitar. Francois Charle. One of the highlights of his trip and a gypsy guitar genius apparently. The Django exhibit at Cite de la Musique had a display of his workmanship, and what's involved in making one by hand. www.hotclub.co.uk/html/charle.html

Kerouac -- that whole area around La Madeleine is not welcoming, not just the passageway. One of my sisters-in-law lives there and it's boooring.

Yes, it is one of my least favourite areas in Paris.

At the Belleville Arts Open Doors in Paris in 2007

K...
On what street is Arcades des Champs Elysées? We just got our tickets to Paris (our 5th trip since 2001). We've done most of Degas' passages walk, but we'd like to create our own walk combined from his highlights and yours. I've located most of the ones I'm interested in, but can't find that one.
Thanks. SS

The Arcades des Champs Elysées, as one might expect, are at 78 avenue des Champs Elysées. Most guidebooks still call them the 'Arcades du Lido' because that's where the Lido was before.

Bonjour! This thread is just amazing! I have seen your posts on TA. My husband and I will visit Paris Sept 2-16, 2014. Staying in Hotel Le Regent in the 6th. We love "off the beaten path" experiences to compliment the usual tourist things to do. I really enjoyed this thread...great pictures! Fun commentary and great observations. I post as mimimurrieta on TA. Thank you for sharing this journey

Great photos of the passages of Paris. I have been through a few of them. I am heading to Paris next month for a one-month stay. Is there a good online map that I could print with the many passages of Paris? I have some listed on my map guides, but not many.
