My city of Pietermaritzburg is hosting its annual Agricultural show at the moment. Part of the festivities is a thrice appearance by some young -and not so young, dare-devil pilots, who fly these lovely and noisy old Harvard planes. As the showgrounds are down the hill from my house I had an opportunity to film them as the buzzed overhead. The short movie was taken with my iPhone and the pics with my Canon 7D with telephoto lens. Here they come! You can almost see the whites of their eyes... And soon it's all over as the fly off...not into the sunset, but more likely the pub! For you Mossie.

Many thanks Tod. You have caught them beautifully. The Harvard is reputedly very noisy because the tips of the propellors routinely exceed the speed of sound which gives that harsh noise. Props are normally geared down to stop that happening. Useless mechanical fact ;D

Mossie - You have answered a question I was afraid to ask....about the noise they make! I LOVE it! I don't know anything about engines but I was wondering why the sound changes as they move around in the sky. Sometimes it sounded almost the same noise a truck engine make against compression..... (I say truck, because I got used to the noise when I was learning to drive a 26 wheeler). I did try very hard to film them on their night show but my camera would not perform due to the fact the light was not suitable for focusing. So here is what they did - lets ride with them..... Holy Moly... was that good or was that GOOOOOOOOD! Meet the team: www.facebook.com/EqstraFlyingLions

Whoooeeee! I adore air shows and you've caught this one perfectly, without giving me a crick in my neck or panic about where to go pee.
Is that your garden in the first video? Beeyooteefull!
Your photos make me want to rush out & get a Canon 7D, except that Canon doesn't sell your skill along with it.

The night video was excellent. It gave a very good impression of formation flying, almost took me back.

Thanks! Yes Bixa, that is my garden. I was standing in the driveway trying to fathom where they would appear. This was about the best shot I got out of three.

Totally fabulous photos of the planes!
At the same time in France, the 'Patrouille de France' (precision flying squad) was celebrating its 60th anniversary and had a big show down in Salon-de-Provence with performances by the other flying teams of the principal European air forces. I saw a bit of it on televison, but your still pictures are better.

Amazing close-ups! I almost feel like I can reach out and touch the planes.
Aerial derring-do is so exciting to watch, isn't it?
