Last week, I saw plenty of grand panoramas on my walking trip in Tirol: farm6.staticflickr.com/5541/9125615678_8fc0a61ccb_c_d.jpg [/img] And one thing I couldn't fail to notice was people flinging themselves off the top of a steep slope, relying on their parachute to glide around and gently (one hopes) down to the valley floor. Not something I'd care to do, but you have to admire the skill and grace of those who do. Not that there's much sign of that at first, with the parachutes laid out on the ground and looking like plastic litter: Then there's the checking of the cables to make sure there are no tangles, consultations about the wind and contact with some distant control point before the take-off is cleared. Eventually, a helter-skelter run sees the parachute pick up air, and then lift the pilot off the ground as the slope falls away beneath. Then, they're flying way out over the valley - and in the heat that settled over Stubaital, like so much of central Europe, last week, the thermals were carrying the paragliders very high indeed. As you walk through the meadows and woods, the sun may suddenly be replaced by a shadow as one passes silently over; or you may suddenly spot one gliding through a grand vista. It's a magnificent sight - but I still wouldn't care to do it myself.

Such a beautiful area, I love the Tirol, we can not wait to get back to Austria. We sat on a hillside in Switzerland one year and watched the paragliders jumping off a cliff and then coming in for a landing, not something we would ever do but it was enjoyable to watch their excitement.
Patrick, the first photo showing the valley floor is wonderful!

Wow ~~ the monitor isn't big enough to hold these fabulous photos!
Even though I knew someone who died paragliding, I can totally understand why people would want to. I only wish I were brave enough to try it.
Your video is out of this world and the music is perfectly chosen -- slightly ominous at first, then soaring.

WoW Patrick, You took some pretty awesome pics! We have a Paraglider in the family so know a thing or three about the dangers. Last year her parachute collapsed in a pocket of zero air(?) and she fell a thousand feet, was terribly hurt but managed to recover enough to now, at this very moment, be walking The Canning Walk in Australia- on her own.

Fantastic, photos and video, Patrick. Really good. I especially love your first photo.
What an amazing feeling that must be, to soar above the earth like that, but not for me either.
Do you know how much instruction a person would receive before taking off?

Paragliding must be a combination of thrill and terror, with the terror overcoming the thrill in my case, I think. At least the "parachute" is already open when you jump, which must be better than jumping out of a place with a parachute that is closed.
I have seen then in the Pyrenees too. I suppose there are some basics to learn, but I know the first lesson is with a person who knows what they are doing. You go in pairs, with the beginner in front.

Magnificent Patrick. I suppose there cannot be real thrill without real terror, but I guess the potential for broken legs or worse must be high.

Spectacular!!! I would love to try doing it but, don't know that I could....I am prone to vertigo.... I have a dear friend who is hooked on paragliding (my age). She travels all over the world doing it with the same group of people. Chile and some other places in South America, Hawaii. Her next venture is in Mongolia!!!

The valleys of the Tirol look similar to those of Switzerland which, after all, is just over the Rhine. There is nothing better than walking on paths through the mountains. Do you stay overnight in mountain huts?

I cannot think of a more beautiful place to do this; if only I had the nerve...
Three members my family did this ( tandem) in Northern Cyprus and I was a complete wreck just watching.
Your photos re wonderful, especially the first which is stunning and the video is too. How close to the conifers were they in reality....because at times the gliders appeared to be heading for disaster ?
