Hi guys...I'll be back on the road in a few weeks time and intend to spend a few days travelling along part of Bavaria's 'Romantic Road'...rough plans as follows...
Tues 16th July...arrive Nuernberg Airport at 10.15am and transfer asap to Rothenburg-an-der-Tauber for the first day/night...probably take the 'Nightwatchman Tour' that night...
Wed 17th July...spend a few hours in the afternoon at Dinkelsbuehl before heading to Noerdlingen for overnight...
Thurs 18th July...visit Harburg Castle and then move on to Augsburg for the night...
Friday 19th July...conclude at Munich...
A few queries...as usual, I'm having trouble understanding my own notes and trying to figure out if Rothenburg is part of the Nuernberg VGN network...
What is the cheapest way or ticket for me to get from Nuernberg Airport to Rothenburg?
I think I'll be busing from Rothenburg to Dinkelsbuehl and then training to Noerdlingen, if that's correct?...and resuming by train to Augsburg, if that's the only option?...
Is Harburg Castle worth stopping off for and is there anything of note between Augsburg and Munich, apart from Dachau or even Andechs?...
i've been to Augsburg before and toying with the idea of visiting Ingolstadt, instead...but the greedy part of me would rather wait and use it a base for the Altmuehtal Valley, sometime in the future...))
Any accommodation suggestions, sightseeing or cheap transport options for this mini-trip are welcome...or any other observations, of course...

You'll get more answers on TT. Not many Germans on here.

I'm sure that WHJ has also tossed the question out to the wolves over there as well...

This German wishes she could help, but I just haven't lived in Germany for such a long time... sorry - and it's not an area I am familiar with.

wow, actually a real travel inquiry on the Germany branch first of all, jack, IMO you're rushing it a bit, may I remind you of the 'rule of three' as it's mandatory at Thorntree: three nights in a place, three spare underwear, three meals a day, not more than three encyclopaedias in your luggage - remember everything you do is fine as long as it can be divided by three! it's been ages since I've been to Rothenburg, so cross-check carfully whatever I write. the YH was very fine IMO, don't forget that strictly speaking there are restrictions for staying for those aged 26+. if you find time, it's worth hiking down from the oldtown into the Tauber valley and back up again... I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the Bavaria ticket etc., so just something different: there's the 'Romantic Road Coach' ( www.eurolines.de/Romantic-Road-Coach.954.0.html?&L=1), a bus that runs along the most popular spots of the Romantic Road. it works somewhat hop-on-hop-off style, i.e. you buy one ticket yet may break your trip - alas it only runs once per day, so the use is a bit limited - just wanted you to know all options... enjoy your trip!

Keine Sorgen, 1970...actually, at this stage I could probably help you with some German queries... Thank you, Bix, all help appreciated...

That transport link is very helpful, Nautiker. Not sure I'll be able to use it though as I'll be taking in more than one place each day...maybe on one of the legs between Rothenburg and Noerdlingen but probably the Bavaria-Ticket makes more sense... The over-26 hostel rules have been relaxed substantially but ideally I'd love to have time to spend an entire day cycling in the Tauber Valley, and maybe visiting Weikersheim, as well... If I understand you correctly, I can just walk out of town and head off directly for a few kilometres?... And, y'know, I thought I was really doing well for dedicating 3 whole days to this stretch of the RR but not good enough for Brother Nautiker's high standards, I see! ...I keep meeting tourists from that b****y bus who do the whole thing - from Wuerzburg to Fuessen - in just one day!... To atone, I shall wear 3 hats and 3 shoes for the duration of the trip and drink 3 beers at a time...15, 18 and 21 sounds and tastes so much better than 5, 6 or 7 - don't you think?... Prost, baby, Prost!!!

Just to update...completed the trip a few weeks ago in excellent weather conditions, just before it got really hot...
Had to make some changes to the itinerary for logistical and social reasons, so I ended up in Wuerzburg the first night and then made it to lovely Rothenburg the following day...then I had to transfer to Ammersee on the third day and spent the night in Schondorf at the northern tip of the lake, before visiting Andechs Monastery on the early afternoon of the fourth day...
So...not exactly the trip I had planned but very enjoyable in its own right...if I get some spare time, I'll write a better summary of the journey...
