chowhound.chow.com/topics/738487Cooking from Oaxaca al Gusto by Diana Kennedy I've not seen the book here anywhere, in Spanish, English or in French translation... sounds fascinating. She is very old now - has turned 90, I believe. She has lived everywhere in North America, first emigrating to Canada from Southwood, England (as per the Spanish wiki, the English one just says "Great Britain", and Kennedy is obviously an Irish surname), and has lived in New York City as well as in various Mexican regions.

Ha ~~ I have extreme identification with the writer of that piece! It's been available at a wonderful bookstore here for quite sometime, but is @50 bucks. I'll probably break down at some point & get it, though. It's almost worth it just for the pictures, some of which you can see here: www.amazon.com/Oaxaca-Gusto-Infinite-Gastronomy-Hemisphere/dp/0292722664I saw her in Oaxaca a few years ago when she was here for a presentation of one of her books & she graciously signed all of my much thumbed & splashed-on copies of her books. My admiration of Diana Kennedy is certainly is a large part of what motivated me to move to this country.

Thanks Bixa! She must have appreciated the fact that your copies of her books were well-used and well-loved.
I have found that there is a copy of her Oaxaca book at a Montréal library branch, and tried to reserve it online, but I can never remember the secret code for my library card, as I never use the code - it isn't necessary to borrow books or even to use the computers there, so I'll either phone or simply visit the closest branch and have it transferred (the branch where the book is located is quite far from here). I'll have to do that this morning, as the book is currently available.

You are most welcome, and certainly deserve a copy for your birthday.
I managed to reserve/transfer the copy! So I should have it by the end of next week, unless there is a bureaucratic kerfuffle.

I've got a very old copy of her original Mexican cooking book--so old its descriptions of possible substitutions for what were then in the '70s the myriad impossible to find even in NYC ingredients are now mostly easily obtained in any small city in the US. I'd hate, hate, hate to go back to the '70s and be forced to deal with only the ingredients the average American grocery store had back then. I can now easily get things that could only be got in a few ethnic shops in large cities or brought back by friends traveling nice enough to make some room in their luggage.

That is true, though there were other lovely things about the 1970s that I miss deeply, a sense of kinship and fraternity, an easy sociability and above all cheap housing that made it possible to be a "creative person" while doing the work it took to keep body and soul together.

I'll control my envy long enough to say how genuinely pleased I am that you got it. Mrs. Kennedy & her publisher should also be pleased that it has reached someone who'll truly appreciate it.
Have a very happy birthday!

Thank you good people. I am already frustrated reading some of the recipes that I have absolutely no clue as to how to go about procuring some of the necessary ingredients.
