I have 4 cats. 3 of the four I took in as kittens, and they are indoor-only. The other came to me as an adult, his owners abandoned him at a vet clinic. He is indoor-outdoor because he gets very obnoxious when he is in the house all day.
One of the indoor cats, the one that hangs out with the dog, is always trying to escape. She has gotten out a few times. Once she came back at 5 AM howling at the bedroom window to be let in. The other time she slipped out when I was leaving the house. When I got back, she was waiting at the door, angry at me for not being there to let her back in.
Last night, I don't know how she got out. We heard meowing and I went outside to find her on the roof. I tried coaxing her down with food, calling her, etc. but she wouldn't come down and I couldn't get to her. We figured she would come back early in the morning like she did the other time, but she didn't. At breakfast, I went walking up and down the street, shaking her food and calling her but still nothing. I am starting to worry. If she doesn't show up by dinner, we'll have to put up signs in the neighborhood. She has an ID tag at least.

good luck. I've had many cats. Some have gone on what we have come to refer to as 'walkabouts',where they will disappear for periods of time,in some cases I've even resigned myself to theyr'e never coming back and they reappear. Hopefully this is the case with yours.

Thanks guys. I have taken in a lot of cats and lost some, I had a really bad streak for a while where one escaped from the house and was killed by a loose dog, another escaped and was found 4 months later (the ex dropped the ball and let her escape in that case) run over by a car pretty far from the house. I lost another to feline leukemia at a young age due to bad vet advice to give the vaccine without testing if she was a carrier first. Another old one I took in died after surgery to remove a tumor, but that was less of a surprise since when I found her she was already old and unwell.
This cat, Loca Miau Miau has been with me for 4 years. I found her on January 19th, 2005 dumped on the sidewalk in a bag in 30 degree Celsius heat. I took them all to my house. One looked sickly from the start and died before I could have the vet come and see him. The other I found a home for and she stayed with me since I have always loved tabbies and had lost another tabby cat recently. She was only about 2 weeks old, so I had to formula feed her and she really seemed to think I was her mom. This is the only home she knows, so I am really worried about her on the street. She is very skittish around people she doesn't know, so even if someone thinks she is lost and wants to look at her tag, they might not be able to.

When we left to evacuate for Katrina thinking we were only going to be gone 3 days tops we left the cats with tons of food and water, access in,out and upstairs. When the shit hit the fan and you couldn't get back into the city I freaked because of the cats. Many others were in the same situation. We were fortunate that we knew some people who were able to get in (press passes, customs officials) so we were able to get updates on the cats. Still and all not everyone coming in had other people's cats on the top of their priority list. Some of the animal humane groups who did some incredible heroics also did seize cats from their territories(places that didn't flood like my neighborhood) against their owners wishes and they never saw their animals again. It was clearly a judgement call. We happened to luck out. After being gone 5 weeks we returned to our dry home with all 3 cats looking healthier than when we left. There were tins of tuna and sardines, anchovies strewn about the yard and driveway. We were blessed. These cats had been feral strays and the chances of them doing better on a 5 week road trip were not good as opposed to being in their own environment with food and water and shelter. And the kindness of strangers.

Oh dear. My beloved Renzo (black cat, 13 years old) disappeared on Halloween weekend this past autumn. He was missing for 5 weeks, including bitter cold. Thank the cat goddess he returned, almost dead from starvation, and seems fine now. I love him so much.

She showed up at 4 am on Saturday, howling and indignant that we were not there waiting at the door to let her in. When I went to get her, she ran under the car, but I was able to grab her. She is a bit dehydrated and hungry and has a few scabs on her face, I assume from a run-in with another cat, but otherwise is fine. What a relief!

Hopefully she won't have picked up any vile diseases or abcesses from her run-ins with other cats. Glad she's home. My kitty boy is sitting on my lap as I type. Don't know where his sister is hanging out - her nose is bent out of shape that there wasn't room on my lap for her, too!

Health-wise she seems fine and I checked her for abcesses and didn't see anything. She has been quite cuddly with me since she arrived back, 3 of the 4 cats all came to see me purring this morning when I was waking up.

Little slut! Out meeting other cats, you should ground her.

Cat skin heals so quickly that infection is often sealed in. Abcesses have a way of simmering under the skin until they get so gross that they burst open. When we had an outdoor kitty, often we would find out about an abcess when she started licking at one spot, which was the abcess that had just opened and drained. The vet would put a tube in it instead of stitching it up, so that the infection could drain out before the healing happened again.

Well, you'll see. I'm so glad your little boss Loca Miau Miau is back! How do you say tabby cat in Chilean Spanish?
A Spanish cat description I love is the Cuban "mariposa" for calico (three-colour) cats - sometimes those are called tabby cats in Britain, do you mean that or the stripey kind? I keep imagining little three-coloured cat butterflies in a tropical landscape.
kerouac, my Renzo has purred merci/grazie many times. He remains rather traumatised and was rather too attached to me - he'd often sleep at night with his paws wrapped around my foot and ankle, especially after I abandoned him for 10 days to a quick work trip to Amsterdam. He is finally acting a bit more normal, following the sun around to sleep in rays, and doing cat yoga.

Kimby - Yesterday on her face, I realized she has a circular area that has no hair and looked like it had bled some. I touched it and fortunately it doesn't feel like an abcess, it's flat. I cleaned it with some iodine. I assume that must have come from some rough play with one of the other cats, not her adventures out of the house. The vet is coming by tonight to pick up the puppy for her spay, so I am going to ask him to take a look, just in case there is need for concern. You've got to love vets that make house calls.

It isn't ringworm is it?

It's definitely not ringworm, fortunately. I have dealt with that before and it is different. The vet said it was probably from playing rough with the other cats, it is scabbing over now, so it should be fine.

when she heals, maybe we could have a pic of her - like Deyana's Lucky - with the funny cute rounded ears (now that they healed)
