I couldn't quite find the right thread for this so have started a new one. In Delhi, India is a small hotel called "Hotel Broadway" It did some renovations a few years ago and held a competition for interior designers to express the spirit of India, each doing one room. I've forgotten the name of the French woman who won, but I had the winning room for 3 nights...room 44 Brace yourselves... Brushed stainless steel wardrobe and shelves Don't let the TV get cold. There was a chair with guns and flowers A place for luggage a bed gentle lighting and a go-anywhere brighter light. A bead screen led to the bathroom which was all glass, mirrors and psychedelia.

sweet jesus!
Honestly, if I could have the red chair & whatever the hell that mirrored thing is that's reflected in the mirror in picture #1, I would be extremely happy. She also incorporated fish, which make any decorating scheme better.
What vision! I hope they let her fix up her room at the asylum to her own taste.
I stayed in a hotel room in Pátzcuaro with a friend and my sister. The proprietress told us that she'd suffered terribly from nerves in the past, but with a regime of cold showers and a kindly doctor, she was fine now. I don't know what Dr. Feelgood gave her, but the woman was zippy.
Our room was the usual two double-bed issue with forgettable nice maroon bedspreads. That was when we saw it the first time. Every time we came back to the room, our kindly innkeeper had added a frill .... or several. I mean frill literally. Once it was organza dust ruffles on the beds. Later she made trimmed organza covers for the lampshade, placed doilies around, etc. The crowning touch, though, was the wire and organza shade she crafted for the standard Mexican bare bulb in the ceiling.
We've marveled over that for years, but your breathtaking vision of taste and verve has totally left those organza and lace flights of fancy in the dust.

But wait ! There's more... Going down to breakfast I found... Yup...got the right place A spiral staircase that leads nowhere except to a gargoyle A full mirrored wall shows the buffet being served from a modified vintage car. a long seat with multiple tables You have to study the detail, sewing machine table, odd chairs, strange wall decorations etc. All the timber columns were rescued from temples being demolished around the country...none of them match. In fact...nothing matches in this room. A four poster bed converted to a table. I have not included many of the wall decorations as the mirrors and stained glass window cut-outs played hell with my focus. All the statuettes, and collected "things" made for a very surreal mealtime.

Though not my taste, I find the public areas much more inviting than the room you rented. I'm afraid I would find that space too over-stimulating and not restful. However, I suppose once the lights are turned out it makes no difference as long as the bed is relatively comfortable and the room temperature is conducive to sleep.

One thing room 44 has going for it is that it look sparkling clean. I'm sure the downstairs was just as clean, but there's something about it (okay, lots of things) that make it seem musty and claustrophobic. Did you get to see any of the other rooms beside the winning one? I love the shot of the lonely twin bed, with the phone & the lighted heart buzzer(?) next to it. Hmmm ~ what's that about? I couldn't quite find the right thread for this so have started a new one. Re: threads ~~ please feel free to make a new travel thread whenever you wish, regardless of whether or not threads already exist on the subject, as everyones experience of a place is different. Themed conversation threads needn't/shouldn't be duplicated, but our where-we-went-what-we-did stories are unique to each of us.

Very colorful! Did it take long to decorate the room in that way, questa? I don't know how long it took but as an expression of 'Spirit of India" it is brilliant. The coloured lights = temple festival lights and family ceremonies The hand worked metal, decorated with symbols= the huge garish trucks that swarm the country Guns and flowers together on the chair = the frequent social upheavals Cartoon type curtain and bed cover = western influence being absorbed TV set given "clothes" = the high position TV sets have in the home Multi coloured tiles = the awesome colour combinations worn by the women in the north. On the metal wardrobe are the symbols of a deck of cards = penchant for gambling The bead screen = harking back to older traditions. There were several mirrors in the room, mirror pieces are often used in textiles and decoration. These were explained to me by the cleaning lady whose English was a bit hard to understand. The room was clean and comfortable, and I enjoyed time coming to understand it. I have never "bonded" with a room except this one.

I very much enjoy places like that. But then again, I am the sort of person who goes out of his way to stay at the Hang Nga Guesthouse in Dalat, Vietnam (see reply #14 here).
