Well, the budget bill has passed the House 285 to 144 and the president has stated he will sign it as soon as it makes its way to his desk. The Republican Party seems to remain divided, with a lot of infighting. The majority of the public is blaming the Tea Party for the shutdown and for attempting moves that could very well send our economy into a depression.

As noted, what an incredible report!!! Fabulous photos and indeed historic. I feel a pang of pride in knowing APIAS was "on the scene". Surely, you deserve a badge for this HTMB!! Well done!!

Thank you all, but I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The trip had been planned back in late August.
I love going to the Washington, DC area. The public transportation system is great and there's always something to do. I hope to get back sometime within the next year.

What a wonderful report Htmb. Of course I had read about the shutdown but I did not really comprehend the impact and the scale before reading your report.
Your photos are excellent as always. Thank you

While reading over this ten year old report I came across this comment by Mossie. What a sad collection of deserted parks, I suppose it reflects the mood of America. Your photos are excellent, I hurry to add, but the whole scene reflects badly. Who could even imagine things would get so bad in Washington, DC, rioters would storm the capitol just a few years later. Now, as I prepare to head back to DC after all these years, the government is once again on the verge of another shut down. The deadline is October 1, but yet congress has recessed for the weekend. Idiots!

I don't think anybody outside of the United States (and probably millions of Americans too) understands the concept of "government shutdown" just because of running over budget, especially since it isn't even true due to the exemption of "essential services" and all that.
To avoid this sort of situation, the most important thing to do would be to immediately suspend the salaries of all of the members of Congress and seize their assets to finance "essential services." I don't think there would be any government shutdowns then.

That whore Kevin McCarthy sent everyone home so they wouldn't take his speakership away from his incompetent ass.
Kerouac's solution is certainly far less violent than the one I'd like to see implemented.
"Freedom Caucus" my Aunt Fanny! It's a pretty fancy name for a bunch of jumped-up, ignorant, trashy, destructive, loudmouthed trash.

We have an equivalent at local government level, but central government has the reserve power to send in commissioners to take control. What would happen if Parliament couldn't/wouldn't do its job is an open question.
