I avoid having my photograph taken.....so the very idea of a 'selfie' makes me feel quite poorly....mind you I took one in the mirror of my new glasses...but only of part of my face.....

I know the feeling!
Yesterday I saw an young couple on the sidewalk ahead of me. They were posing for a selfie with the guy's phone. They were happy, attractive, & in love. It occurred to me that the scene I'd just witnessed was probably a new "iconic view" of romance, as the forehead-to-foread shots sharing a soda, or pics of a couple nestled together under an umbrella were in the past.

It now appears that the very first photo ever made might have been a selfie! Story here.

I'm thinking that one of the current trademarked names in the image industry is perhaps the most likely to become a lower case word some day, just like kleenex, cellophane or linoleum: instagram.

Speaking of "word of the year", is there any term in English for using an e-cigarette?
In French, the term for using one is "vapoter" which more or less would mean "to make vapour."

Interesting & makes sense!
Incidentally, why are they called e-cigarettes? Is the e for electronic?

I would suspect that the term was adapted from the French one. But maybe not. When people talk about e-cigarettes in English, do they talk about vapour? smoke? steam? -- as what appears after the puff?

I read in the paper this morning that there has been a link to teenagers taking group selfies and an increase of head lice although, no real proof of it, a few health clinics in various parts of the country have reported it. All the cases, the victims were questioned as to whether or not they had engaged recently in a group selfie.....all reported that they had. Too much head to head contact. How bizarre I thought.

Hmmm ~~ doesn't that smack a little bit of all the reports in the 70s of terrible injuries caused by break dancing? Ditto your eyes staying that way if you crossed them or any number of other scare stories by disapproving adults.
