I sat and watched the Parliament appoint Cyril Ramapossa as our new president. That happened at precisely 2.30pm after a lot of ructions by the EFF. He still has to be sworn in. I think an enormous amount of strings were pulled to get this out of the way so swiftly. We heard of threats of violence and total shut-down by Zuma's one wife. Not sure if she is wife number 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. South Africa accepted the news in the street as if nothing had happened. No jubilation or demos in the streets. Very calm transition thank goodness.
We have had a number of jokes coming through on our cell phones. One depicted the "Jacobs" Koning coffee being renamed "Cyril" coffee. The other was a comment on how stupid a president can be to resign or leave his love, on Valentines Day! I personally thought the man should have at least waited for a less romantic date!

No particular reason to bring this up again other than it is worth remembering even 10 years later.

Now Jimmy Carter is dying...at home with palliative care, as he wanted.

Oh no! I've been avoiding all news for various personal reasons, so did not know about his illness. I know Jimmie Carter is very old and that he lived a truly exemplary and good life. Even so, as he is one person I will always venerate, will always hold up as the example of shining goodness, it's hard to hear of his imminent passing from our imperfect world.
