I attended the ENT dept at hospital a couple of days ago. The quack took one look at the lumps behind my ear and called in his boss. Take a biopsy and make on appointment for 2 to 3 weeks time was the instruction. So I face Christmas with a plaster and padding all over my ear, and still keep stuffing the antibiotics into myself. he muttered about cosmetic surgery, so I asked if I will need lipstick. I do not fancy the sound of all that, coward that I am.

Oh, that photo is gruesome, mossie. With me, it had me wondering at first if I had a sudden invasion of bedbugs. But it was soon clear that the bumps were not bites but something inside me trying to get out.

I'm allergic to penicillin, too. Of course, the hives are awful, but it's when your airways start shutting down due to the allergic reaction that really gets you into trouble.
Mossie, so sorry your ear continues to be problematic. Is it painful?

Thankfully no. Just the plaster irritates, but it will come off in the morning and I trust the bleeding has stopped. Lovely Christmas present, I don't think.

Mossie - My husband gets hives like that for no reason. Yes, he is allergic to penicillin but has not had it for many many years.

Mossie I was thinking about your ear...has it healed properly?
I had to come home in the middle of the day today - This sore throat is not improving so I got the pharmacy to send me some Amoxiclav (Augmentin)and is penicillin. Luckily I can take it. I am hoping this really knocks it on the head.

Glad to hear you are at home again. It's been a long hard slog for you unfortunately. I still haven't decided about my ear. Those Amoxiclav's were brilliant. After the second one in 24hrs my sore throat had gone. Now to keep up with the tabs until finished. It is very handy when you know your pharmacist and he regularly dispenses scripts for you. Here pharmacies can give you script stuff at their discretion. After all, the chemist man knows far more about drugs than the doctor. That's a fact.

Hope your ear continues to get better, Mossie.
I've now reversed my thinking and, instead of a cold of flu, I think I've just got good old spring allergies. I'm hopeful my symptoms, which aren't all that bad now, will soon disappear.

Well, there you go. I thought I had allergies all week, and it;s turned out to be sinusitis. If this continues it's antibiotics.

I'm in the middle of a marathon work schedule and had hoped to be able to get some personal things done at home over the weekend. Instead, I've come down with a lousy cold. Yesterday I had a fever and sore throat; on today's agenda was coughing and general malaise. At least I'm making progress. I've managed to watch three and a half films and get in some rest. Tomorrow I'll be back to a grueling work schedule with 12 to 14 hour days of physical and mental stress and strain.
Since today is Mother's Day in the U.S., we normally would have shared a family meal. Instead, I've banned all visitors. However, my oldest and her daughters just slipped in and out the door and have left me several goodies including chicken salad, flavored water, sorbet, and some sort of nasty herbal concoction guaranteed to battle cold germs. They also left a tiny little bar of good chocolate, which I ate first. I must be getting better.

Ah, the famous "spring cold" syndrome. I used to get those all the time but have skipped the tradition for the past few years -- probably since I stopped working and am no longer as much in close quarters in public transportation.
I hope you both recover quickly.

Now I've got it - and haven't been around anyone but my dog.
My tongue was dried out and stuck to the roof of my mouth, this morning - probably because I couldn't breathe through my nose. My head feels like it weighs a ton and I'm having trouble doing simple tasks, like tying my shoes. I'm convinced it's because I threw caution to the winds (as it were) and turned on my fan, because it was very hot in my apartment, yesterday. Everyone knows that even a small "courant d'air" will make you very sick or will probably kill you outright.
Remedies: Homemade cucumber/mint/lemon water, herbal tea, essential oil of peppermint (two drops under each nostril, as needed, works immediately), aspirin, soup from a carton, sleep.
Happy Mothers' Day to everyone and get well soon!

My cold is definitely work related. Many of the folks I've been supervising have it, too. I seem to catch a cold every year at this time, but maybe it won't happen next year since I'll be retired. Unfortunately, I can't stop to get the rest I need right now, so must count on you to do double-duty, Chexbres. Take care

Why do things always seem worse when you don't feel well? I'm out of town with my family. It's the first time we've all been together in three years. Last night, after a wonderful evening spent celebrating my retirement, I came down with symptoms of a cold: congestion, sore throat, couldn't sleep.
Feeling rotten this morning I took some Tylenol and went back to bed, only to hear from a (former) coworker that the police had been called to my home because there was a possible break-in.
To make a very long story short, the roofers had accidentally set off an alarm, but no one was around who could turn it off. I started getting ready to leave for home, an hour and a half away, but my son contacted a good friend and had him go take care of my problem instead.
I still feel like crap and will now owe the police for a false alarm call, but at least I was saved a trip.
And there's still no cable tv or wifi here. That's making me feel worse.

Feel better soon, htmb! It's probably somebody in your former office, wreaking a little revenge...
I came back from 3 really beautiful days at the beach, felt great for 2 days afterwards, and now have a raging sore throat. Maybe I should just go back.

I came back from 3 really beautiful days at the beach, felt great for 2 days afterwards, and now have a raging sore throat. Maybe I should just go back. I still have some throat lozenges I got from a pharmacy not far from you in Paris. They're called "Drill," and work well to calm a sore throat.

Thanks, htmb - I have two boxes of Drill that I'm working on, right now. Also using "Eludril", a fiery mouthwash to gargle with - that stuff will probably kill any remaining germs. Unfortunately, I woke up around 4 this morning with a killer migraine. I have medication to take for that, but it hasn't kicked in, yet. The beach still sounds like a good idea - if you're alone, that is!

On Thursday, I saw my doctor who gave me both a flu shot and the first of two vaccinations for Hepatitis A. That night, while trying to go to sleep, I debeloped a fever and horrible chills. I felt too miserable to get up, go downstairs, and find something to help alleviate my symptoms, so I grabbed another blanket and some extra clothes, turned off the ceiling fan, and shivered for the next three hours. I felt really rotten on Friday, so I slept off and on most of the day. By Friday night I was fine.
I've been getting an annual flu shot for, at least, the last 20 years. Working in the school system, it always seemed like a good idea. During that time I never really had a bad case of the flu, nor do I ever remember having had a reaction to the vaccine. I'm guessing either the Hep A vaccine or the combination of the two vaccinations together triggered the reaction this time.

The French news has said that the intestinal flu is now ravaging France, about 3 months ahead of schedule. I normally never get it, but since I have an imminent trip planned, I just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Had my flu jab this morning in my left arm. Driving away my right arm started to ache. Conclusion, it must be Irish flu in the vaccine.
Sorry to hear your problems htmb, multiple vaccinations are not recommended because of the chance of a reaction. Hope you soon improve.

htmb- hope you're feeling better soon!
For the first time, I got my flu shot and only had a giant hive appear. Normally, I get just about as sick as htmb did. I hope this wasn't a placebo or something.

Kerouac...don't worry about crossing your fingers...just wash them (and all hands) as often as possible and/or use hand sanitiser while you are out. Give movie theatres and crowds, public transport etc a miss for a while. Use sanitiser tissues to push ATM or lift buttons and open public toilet doors. I am lucky in that I haven't had a cold or flu for over 20 years, get a flu shot each March which has not yet had any side effects. I remember the utter misery of being sick with colds though. Get well soon all of you.

I think I may get a flu shot this year.

Paracetamol (Panadol etc) will help with pain but it is not an anti-inflammation medication. If you don't have stomach problems nor on blood thinning medications, it is better to use aspirin or ibuprofen. These will knock out the inflamed throat and joint pains. Try to have food with them, or glass of milk, yogurt etc.
