Though coq au vin is traditionally prepared with red wine, oui?, are there other versions of this dish prepared with other regional wines? Would like to prepare something different for a friend's birthday who adore's coq au vin.

I should think that you can use white wine if you want, it will all depend on the herbs and vegetables you put with. Let me check a few cookbooks for you!

found a few online, searching "coq au vin"+recipe+"white wine".
ok, the tradition wants red wine... but do play with the recipe!

You can even make dishes like that with beer. Of course, they become different dishes, but often just as good.

Bravo Baz! I knew I had read of some specific regional wine used in another version of this dish. Lo and behold I found the mag it was in and voila it is indeed an Alsace dry Reisling Thank you!

Cider would also be worth a try I cook a lovely dish with chicken and cider and think it would work here.

I've made it with white wine, lots of cherry tomatoes, lots of herbs and a splash of balsamico vinegar. Hubby loves it. (And I do too)
