Things can only improve as the years go by, but one of the more unfortunate statistics about India is that 50% of the population still relieve themselves outdoors in conditions of rather deplorable hygiene.
I have unfortunately made only one trip to India so far, but I must admit that the subject remains one of the details that marked me the most. I arrived at Madras (Chennai) airport in the early morning hours and took the extremely convenient commuter train that goes from the airport to the central station. I was frankly astounded to see (being a naïve traveller), as the train passed through the suburbs, lines of ten or more men along the way squatting together with their backs to the train, relieving themselves. Over and over again as the train approached the city. In Chennai itself, I constantly saw men either urinating or defecating between the parked cars along the street in total tranquillity without a bit of shame. Seeing so much of this everywhere really caused me to wonder how women in India deal with this, because I never saw a single woman doing this anywhere.
Anyway, UNICEF India has made a rather remarkable video to try to get people to take care of their needs with a bit more dignity. The only thing that bothers me about the video is that Indian poo doesn't look like French poo at all. It looks like a French dessert.

Catchy tune. If I were to show the video to my grandchildren that would become their "song of the month," replacing "Do you want to build a snowman" from Frozen.
