If you enjoy small ship travel you had better hurry before the new airport is completed on St.Helena in 2016. This airport will do away with the last remaining Royal Mail Ship in the world, namely the RMS St Helena. The remote island, so well known by it's association with Napoleon, has a population of 4,000 people. It takes five nights to sail from Cape Town to Jamestown on St.Helena. There are numerous activities on board for the small number of passengers. Dinner is a five course meal with lots of tea and cake in between meals. Things You Should Know About St.Helena: It is an isolated land mass,( one of the most remote islands in the world), and situated 3,000km from Cape Town, South Africa. It is a British Colony. The people of St.Helena and their descendants are known as Saints. The Saints are a rich mixture of all the nationalities that settled on the island from 1502 onwards. They came from places as far afield as Madagascar, China, India, Spain, Portugal, France, England and Africa. We know that Napoleon, King Dinuzulu, other Zulu chiefs and Boer War prisoners, were political prisoners who were exiled on St.Helena. In 1873, 442 Saints immigrated to KwaZulu-Natal because of an economic struggle to survive. This was caused by the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 when ships no longer needed to stop at St.Helena for fresh supplies. This could be a holiday with a difference for the young at heart, starting and ending with a few days in fabulous Cape Town. rms-st-helena.com/

Yes, I have always planned to do this. Obstacle #1 (work) is finally out of the way, but obstacle #2 remains.

What on earth is "beef tea"?

bjd - 'Beef Tea' is a watery liquid made of boiled beef, not to be confused with salt beef. Today I think you would substitute the long version with a teaspoon of Bovril and boiling water. Beef Tea was given to patients who were weak and needed a bit of 'beefing up'!
If I have given the wrong version, please correct me.

I've always understood that's why Bovril was invented. I seem to remember my mother giving it to me in my childhood. Once. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

Sometimes I imagine the trip being like this.

I don't see anyone playing shuffleboard.
And that's a reasonably sized ship! Can you imagine being in one of those small boats doing a round-the-world race?
