i decided to use up one of these unmarked boxes of food that have been crowding the freezer for ages. i thought it was a vegetable curry so i prepared some dough to make dosa with it. well, now that it is thawing i realized it is a chicken dish (not even sure it is a curry, but i guess with the right spices it can still become one), but what i am wondering is, is it risky to eat? the first dishes i froze about a year and a half ago, so it can be from anytime since then ...

As long as it is heated to bacteria-killing temperature, there is little risk except to your taste buds.

just to report back, it turned out to be pork rather than chicken - gulash, in fact. well, i only realized this after putting in the curry paste (jhalfrezi paste and some ginger garlic paste) but i thought it made for an interesting mixture. we also had some lentil curry along with it ...

I have made pork curry numerous times and even though it appears to be the meat least suited for curry, it is not bad anyway.

I believe pork curry is popular in Goa.

the mother of the family we stayed with in kerala made pork for us once, because she heard it is popular in germany. she asked if i liked it and of course i said i did. then after that she made pork several more times always telling me she made my favourite meat (in fact i am not that big a fan of pork, though i don't mind it either) ... i don't know how often the family ate pork before that though, seemed to me like it was something that was a bit uncommon to them but not completely strange ...

Pork curries are relatively common in Thailand and Vietnam.

I thought there was a separate thread simply called "Freezer Surprise" sans the "Still Good" part but I couldn't find it. In any event this is rather humorous... During my husband's absence this summer I rarely if ever cooked and subsisted on mainly fresh fruit and raw vegetables. Because I was too lazy to walk the trek out to the "back forty" to the compost bin with only a couple of banana peels, avocado skins and pits, egg shells, etc. I placed them in the freezer to keep away the fruit flies. By the time my husband came home there was quite a cache so to speak, in a plastic bag that was overflowing. This morning when T. went to get something out of the freezer, out came a cascade of approximately 3 months of all of the above. Thank god it didn't fall on his foot!! He called out WTF? I walked into the kitchen and on the floor was the summer's compost contributions. We laughed a good bit.
