The concept of the caffè sospeso apparently originated in Naples. It consists of ordering one coffee but paying for two. The second coffee will be given free of charge at some future time to someone in need. From what I read, it used to be a rather common practice but it is now fading away. I had heard that it is now gaining ground in France, but I had never seen any proof of it, so I was delighted to see this on the window of a café in Limoges.

It's a very nice and wonderful idea Kerouac and one which would work in Europe, but not here -I don't think. The "someone in need" would be a queue a mile long with shoving and fighting over position. That would be enough to keep any customers away from buying a coffee. Somehow I also think the double price would go straight into the owners pocket
