All so gorgeous! Most especially the Gaudi Barcelona pics. I have a special affinity for this art form craft. The most beautiful ones I ever saw (thus far) were in Istanbul. Mind blowing!! Thanks for these all!!

These are a few of the mosaics decorating the Economic, Social and Environmental Council building ("Palais d'Iéna") in Paris.

Casimira...I agree, Istanbul has some of the best I have ever seen as well. All through Central Asia the mosaic work is mind-blowing. I must dig up some more.

@ kerouac2 The pic with the train, where is it taken? Beautiful ceiling! I love mosaics in vivid colours, by the way. Have some myself of Piazza Armerina, Sicily.

That's the Cluny-Sorbonne station, amboseli. And the other ones in the same group are part of the connecting corridor between Cluny and Saint Michel.

I was thinking that the 3rd of your Sicily photos must not quite be from the same era as the first two.

You mean the famous 'bikini girls'? There are clearly differences in style of the various mosaics in the Villa Romana del Casale (total surface with mosaics is over 3500 m²!!). From what I've read this does not necessarily mean that they're from a different era but rather from the fact that different workmen followed different styles.

I used to stay near the Cluny-Sorbonne station and have always loved that ceiling. Funny. I never once went through there on this trip.

Oooh, may I make a special request that you do, then? It seems such an exquisite memorial to Rudolph Nureyev.

I loved that one the moment I saw it on another thread, htmb! I had no idea you'd seen it, Kerouac. I thought the components were interesting: turquoise, conch, jade, human bone, hair and teeth, among other things.
